Alloy looks a bit nicer when bare. Steel will/should be galvanised so not too shiny.
The brackets shouldn't be alloy, they should still be galvanised. As for thickness, if going for an alloy plate with galvanised brackets, you should go for 10mm brackets and 8mm plate. If you go for all galvanised, then you don't require the plate to be so thick. After looking around for mine, I ended up going with the Paddocks PM716 as the price is great and the finish is actually brilliant. http://www.paddockspares.com/pm716-heavy-d...ender.html The other thing to consider is are you going to actually use it or is it for show? If you are going to be smacking the life out of it every couple of days, then possibly the full galvanised one would be better. In my opinion, if there is a chance that you will be using it, even occasionally, then I wouldn't go for any painted or powder coated one. Possibly a bit late now as you say you have some new steering components but instead of a guard i went for solid steering bars. Less additional weight and keeps the front looking standard. Also for the purposes of farming and lanes amply strong. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

A few things to consider.
Some of the steel steering guards are electro plated and not hot dipped galv. OK a smoother finish but nowhere near as good for rust resistant. Get some with built in recovery eyes unless you have them already built in on a bumper. Avoid el cheapo ones on the bay as I have seen them fracture around the bolt holes. Yes you can get one powder coated a nice bright pink colour or boring black if you so wish. Brendan |

Don't see the point in Alloy myself being weaker. Only plus point is weight but is that really an issue on a Defender?....
Rebel 4x4 galved steel one on mine. Previous owner fitted (glad he did) and has been on for over four years with not a single problem at all. About 10mm think I think. *Edit built in recovery eye's too* ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

Thanks for all the suggestions, I opted for a galvanised job from Paddocks with towing eyes, I don't expect to be doing anything too extreme, but better to be safe than sorry.
Plus it will look cool with the new chassis
Need to go SWMBO needs her tea and apparently I'm chef for tonight. Need to keep her sweet it our anniversary tomorrow.  
Dave I built a garage for my Mini With a place for everything and everthing in its place. Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and  all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum |

The Land Rover standard one is worth considering, I've had mine on for 3 years now and it still looks good.

Agree with BPman I've got the same as above and it was the same one fitted as standard to the SVX. The one I have 'has done the rounds' and been fitted on two previous forum member vehicles. I had it stripped, dipped and powder-coated and I too think it is a decent looking guard.

I am thinking of removing mine and fitting the military style bar and possibly dan bars. Mainly as I am putting a multi mount on the front for the snowplough and winch and don't want to cut the guard but partly I find when I am stuck it acts a a plough when being recovered backwards and lifts the front wheels out of traction when going forward

Thanks. Front end currently in pieces for ongoing current modification at the moment. 316 stainless bowshackles attached to the recovery eyes on my HD bumper. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
