Johnny ... a trip to the Salisbury plains would fix that, standard form of comms on the plains
 you should be able to hear loads out there.

Probably there's no-one listening.
Mobile phones were the greatast thing to happen to communications. All the CB morons now text each other instead of crowding the airwaves with stupid echoing banter 
The sane and serious users now have the channels back.  |

Err Laurie, that's a bit of an insulting and sweeping judgement!
I met loads of new people through the CB when I was a teenager and even met Mr W on an "eyeball" - been together for 28 years now.... There were plenty of idiots around but mostly in our area (semi-rural) people were sensible and polite and tried not to annoy other users by shopping channels when asked and so on. In my experience it was the ham radio people that spoiled out enjoyment all summer with constant bleed over of CQDS etc blasting us out.....

Pam, no insults were intended to anyone who uses CB responsibly.
It's the number of complete idiots running 500 watts and echo mikes that were drowning the rest of us out. Most of them seemed to think they owned certain channels and spoke nothing but gibberish. The eighties, when FM CB first became legal were the worst days. I'm just glad they've all found other ways of communication and left responsible users to play without interuption. |

I got into CB in the 80s when FM was first legalised.....
In my area, as I said, there were some idiots but mostly it was great - but probably due to location, less population so airwaves not so busy as maybe in the bigger towns and cities, so mostly pretty cool. Also a lot of locals had been AMers before but swopped to FM to get legal, so were well versed in CB etiquette, and kept new people in check. One of em was a bit overbearing, but she had good intentions. I never saw the point of echo mikes, ruined a good conversation! I only ever use CB now when out laning with other people.
As said, mobiles have taken over. and PMR, which I really prefer, but not many people seem to use them... far more channel selections and better quality broadcasts. Iv'e got both in my 90 (well, all 3 actually if i've got my phone with me!) |

The biggest difference i see between Mobiles and CB/PMR is.......
If i am on the M4 and want a report on what the traffic is like 3 miles up the road, I can't pick up my mobile and call someone, whereas a CB/PMR can do that, i thought it would still be more heavily used for that purpose if nothing else.....I have a HAM license, is that used much by vehicle users ? Only use VHF / UHF when abroad with the motor which is not that often at present

It's certainly useful, and sometimes interesting listening to others. I was sat on the M62 on Friday for nearly 5 hours, and I had the CB tuned in, and was listening to the truckers. Blimey, some topics were, shall I say, interesting
 For example, describing in detail (including reg numbers) the ladies in the traffic, and when I say in detail, I mean in detail  An engine to TDi for!

It is still legal to use CB whilst driving unlike a mobile phone.
