TD5 aircon smelly...
My 2003 TD5 90 CSW has the under dash air-conditioning system. Whenever it is first switched on, it emits a pretty unpleasant musty smell.

This gets less intense after a few minutes, but it always has a certain odour about it, and its putting SWMBO off driving it, which is very bad because that means she has claimed my Disco as her everyday transport. Evil or Very Mad

I love driving the 90, but not for long journeys, so ideally I would like to fix the problem.

I have already used a Car-Plan air-conditioning system cleaner, which in my wifes opinion smelt worse than the original musty smell Big Cry

So, I now want to strip it down to clean it out properly. Has anyone done this and can give me any pointers? Is it a big nasty job? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

I would try a better one than car plan! The good qulaity ones normally do the trick on the tractors.

Try and get hold of a Wurth air con cleaner, they are good kits.

Running it for a long time on its coldest setting also helps as kills of the bacteria fungi that lives in there, and check your drain is clear. I also spray gt85 into the fan of mine, so smells nice when I fire it up, which is not often. How come Wendy uses it so much?

Hi Andy, I'll give the Worth stuff a try. Wendy uses the Defender because our number 2 son has got her Fiat at the moment. She also nicks my Disco 4 whenever she gets the chance! The Defender is used mainly for taking the dogs out, it easier to clean out than the D4.

How's Monty? We've just got Charlie and Lola now, all other pups gone. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

After you fix the smell, remember to run the air con in fan mode for a minute b4 you turn off the engine at the end of your journey. I do this every time when I'm abt to get to the parking lot. This helps in getting rid of the condensation on the fins of the blower. So less moisture, less likely for mould to grow.

Yeah, it's just a lil cumbersome, but you don't happen to always leave the ac on? From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

Have you checked that the drain from the A/C unit is not blocked,if it is you will have stagnent smelly water lying in there which could be causing the smell. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I presume the drain s ok, as water emits from the rear of the front left wheel arch when the AC has been running for a while. No sign of any dampness in the carpets, or in the sound proofing. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Yep that sounds ok.

Try a cleaner, or make the disco smell bad worse so you get it back. Thumbs Up

Update to this.

After lots of green lanes in the TD5 this weekend, aircon on all the time. I did notice it dripping from behind the front wheel, but I also became aware of a very wet floor on the passenger side.

Close inspection revealed that the thick rubber floor mat was pinching the drain pipe and half pushing it out of its hole in the footwell.

I cut the floor mat to fit around the pipe, and pushed the pipe fully home into its hole in the floor. Now much more water drips out behind the front wheel, and the smell seems to have abated.

Happy days Cool 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
