1995 Defender 90 300 Tdi CSW Stornoway Grey

Defender 90- 1995 300TDI

Finally had some time to download some photos of my project, a '95 300TDI which I bought back in April.

Its been a rush as it was bought to pull my hovercraft as I race it in the European championship and needed something to tow it with.

it arrived in a bit of a sorry state, bodywork was slightly tired for its age but the mechanical's and the underneath were in very good working order. it had around 180.000km on the clock (110k miles).

On arrival:

First stop, two days after buying it was the bodyshop. stripped down and a full external re-spray in stornaway grey and black roof

Once finished painting, it was straight over to my mechanic friend who gave it a good service with new belts, all oil changes and replacement of any part that needed doing or was common to failure.

After this it was a visit to the local car hifi installer who fitted sound proofing, he literally covered every inch of the car!! After which new Lasalle headtrim was fitted

On its return just in time to leave for the first race of the season, new KBX grill and new boots were fitted, x-tech alloys with Cooper discovery STT 235x85x16. Fitting this size which is a standard size for later model LR was a pain, due to the laws in Italy, wheel and tire sizes are written on the log book and just to get permission took all of 2 months with letters to LR for a declaration that they are safe to fit after which one still has to do the equivalent of an SVA test to receive a sticker for the log book with the new tire sizes!

Once returned to me, I left straight away for the first leg of the championship which happened to be held in the UK, just 1800km from me!

and upon arrival a quick stop at the forum sponsor, CSK land rovers. Chris did a great job on the car and fitted the new DRL bumper, Momo steering wheel, Carbon wing mirror covers, LR lettering on the front and a quick tweak of the fuel pump! Also on order from Chris are a new cubby box and a set of seats.

After the race it was a quick drive back to Italy, in total 3800km return trip in less than a week with an average of 27 MPG! Between the sound proofing and 2-stroke oil in the diesel, the car was reasonably quiet enough to hear the radio

All in all my start to defender ownership has already been quite a journey, but it has never stopped to amaze me and really is great fun! I will post the new modifications as they go on one by one.

Thanks, I think if I remember it was just a Alfa Giulia,

Wow, your 90 looks amazing! You've got by far the best engine, the 300 Tdi (Not that I'm biased

), and in the best colour too (Again, not that I'm biased

)

Time for a update! Having finished the racing season, I finally had time to put some effort into finishing the interior. In the end this last year my defender has only seen some muddy fields and some long motorway cruises but if all goes well it should do some green laning in the next months or so if it ever stops raining!!

On the exterior I only added the LR centre caps to the alloys and added a nice Falon nameplate to the rear, I had seen a few on the forum and they finish off the rear really nice

After which it was a start on the interior, first step, recover the MUD centre console with vynil which matches the rest of the interior. Added to this was a set of Carling switches which commands the lights and other things. Note that I have removed the auto system from the CSK DLR bumper and wired them into a switch as well as adding a MOMO controller that switches the DLRs off when the lights are switched on.

Having added interior LEDs to all the lights, I decided the dash was in need of some renewal as 90% of the lights behind the gauges were blown, on closer inspection, the bulbs had not only blown but also fused to the plastic and so new gauges were needed.

I found some funky electronic ones that looked ok and a new fuel gauge in a matching gauge is on order if it ever arrives!!

With the new steering wheel from Chris at CSK, the interior was starting to look good!

Then I decided to add some lights to the rear footwells to help when searching for thing you drop, I had a set of home interior LED spots that run on 12v and after some testing decided to fit those as they did the job very well! Well worth using home lighting as you can find them at a much lower price that the car lighting.

Once the interior lighting was finished it was time to move onto the door cards. During the initial build I had covered them with Alcantara but I was not happy with the finish, between the bad job I had done covering the door cards and the actual material itself, finding a different material was high on the list.

On a trip to my local car parts place, I found a roll of vynil fake leather with cube/carbon fibre effect and decided to use this. I proceeded to glue and fit this material which came out well. Being vinyl you could do as with sticker and heat up the material so as to stretch it round the corners and if you heat it up enough, it then keeps this shape.

Finally, to finish off the interior I bought a set of SVX type seats from Chris at CSK which finished of the interior a treat!!! Although I am still debating on some finishing touches such as removing the alcantara of the dash and replacing it with the same vinyl as the door cards.

The big descision now is the rear, do I leave the bench seats in or update to Puma type back seats or the exmoor trim type?! 1995 300TDI CSW 90
