Abs problems...
All my warning lights are on on the dash, abs, tc and brake warning light. I have had it plugged in at the local specialist and the nanocom is diagnosing an abs pump fault (fault 2?)

I am trying to find a cheap fix to this by checking earths to the ecu, wheel sensors for dirt etc... I am now renewing all the brake fluid hoping that if the pump isn't working it might work better with new fluid.

However, I have hit a problem. I am using an eezibleed kit so it should be straight forward, but it isn't! Three calipers will bleed up fine but the front near side just will not bleed up. There is a constant and steady stream of bubbles traveling down the clear pipe. I have already sent 2 litres through the system and I am about to start on my third.

Is this a common problem when bleeding up a complete system?
Could this be caused by a faulty abs pump?
Are there any other things I can try or check before I replace the pump - bearing in mind these are nearly 2k from land rover and close to 1300 quid OEM!!!!!!!!

Please help as I am not good looking enough to be successful at selling my body to pay for a new pump. Big Cry

Jim,

Am aware yours is a TD5 but I had very similar problems to yourself just last week....ABS light TC and Brake....Turned out to be a chafed cable. If you're a dab hand with a multimeter/insulation tester (or know someone that is) have a decent set of diagrams it would only take 30 minutes or so to check the wiring. But I had no faults being thrown up......
Worth whipping out the sensors and giving them a clean too as a non-producing sensor will give you the same symptoms but as mentioned not the fault code.

Edit***** In such a case as yours if the ABS pump is 'goosed' and you don't use it much the alternative would be to consider removing the ABS system in it's entirety instead perhaps?..... If you've no system and no lights it's not a fail MOT time and it's a damn sight cheaper option. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I have thought about removing it, having read info on other forums but have since found a company (ecu testing.com) who offer to recondition your pump for just less than £200.

Things like this always seem to happen after I have done something that could cause it, like the pressure washing and dinitroling I did three days before the fault occurred, although I really cannot see any damage underneath and I have cleaned the rear sensors, even though I masked the hubs off thoroughly before I sprayed the underseal on. Maybe just a coincidence.....the local garage say the nanocom would indicate individual sensor faults.

However, maybe shorts to earth, like your link suggests, would read something else.

The fault codes have been cleared and have reappeared saying the same thing....pump failure 2.

Has anybody any suggestions for bleeding the system?

Update time.

I have changed the fluid and re bled the system.....finally, by cracking the unions one by one on top of the abs unit and bleeding from there....fluid everywhere! Then doing each wheel in order, then going for a drive and anchoring on a few times and redoing everything again. I have done that three times and gone through nearly a gallon of fluid and there is still a small amount of air in the system, but not enough to require any pumping to do an emergency stop so I will liv with that for now.

I have booked in for a insulation type test at my local auto electrician to check for damage...charging 1 hours labour...I'll live with that. He did say on the phone it would be unlikely as he reckons if the diagnostics say pump failure then that is exactly what you have got....but it is worth a punt before forking out for a new one.

I will update on Wednesday after he has checked it.


On top of that, when the engine is running the pedal sinks down nearly to the floor....great....servo problems, or possibly a leaking vacuum hose somewhere. Is here any way to seal those rubber union things? i have recently removed the egr and connected the 2 vacuum hoses together.

When I got the 3 Amigos on my TD5, I had it checked and the codes stated shuttle valve issue. There are a number of fixes for this on the web, but it looked too hairy for me..!

I found a company in Nottingham that would receive and test the ABS unit, if it could be fixed they charged £195. If not, they returned it for the cost of postage. In my case they said the pump motor was actually seized and it was un repairable.

Subsequently, on the advice of Greeni of this forum, contacted a breaker who is actually just down the road from me and got a complete ABS modulator for £150. Fitted it myself and followed the instructions on the web for bleeding the ABS unit and its all working just fine (for 12 months now).

Yes, ECU Testing. They were very helpful. I actually took my unit to them, but as it was just a drop-off I might as well have posted.

Well, the pump is out and in the post. Bloody carpet retainer was in the way of the pedal box bolts....thought I was going to have to remove the dash! Anyway, managed in the end.

Time will tell....hope ecu testing can fix it and post back quickly. I hate being without a car, although it does mean I use my bike more.

The guys face behind the counter of the post office was a picture when he asked me how much it was worth! Extra insurance needed(3 quid)

I love this forum, just been told I also require a new module as the ABS pump has failed and within an hour or so I get polite to this thread.

I'll be speaking to ECU testing and seeing what they can do!

Sorry to hear yours is knackered too, but thanks for posting!!!!

Well, ecu testing have been brilliant and it is winging its way back to me as we speak. However, the saga is not over as they found no faults Big Cry

Time to double check the wiring and connectors, earths etc....get plugged in again....maybe send the ecu off next time.

This is turning in to a right saga. For your sake Thor, I hope it is the pump...you really don't want to be chasing electrical gremlins. Good luck with it...I hope it is straight forward

If they found no problems, at least the expensively but has been eliminated.. Very Happy

You might find that it is the connectors at fault (just dirty..?) and reconnecting it might just fix the problem.

Maybe I should rephrase. For your sake Thor, I hope it is the pump and they CAN fix it. I would have taken that scenario as they charge £195 for that

Cheers Jimb, I'll not be taking anything out my self as it'd never go back in. Hoping to get the full low down on mine tomorrow then give ecu testing a call.

If I post mine I'll pay the insurance, then hope and prey it gets lost so I claim for a new one haha
