Depends what you want to use it for and, to a certain degree, how fashion conscious you are.
If you plan to use a roof tent then you really need one without side rails, at least on one edge. Patriot, Hannibal and Front Runner all offer suitable ones but they all tend to be in the higher price ranges. A much cheaper alternative for that use would be to fit roof bars. For general purpose use you could do a lot worse than look at the various offerings from Brownchurch. They aren't as sexy as the newer extruded aluminium designs, but they're well proven and good value. Land Rover racks (as shown in the picture at the top of the page) look fantastic but are expensive new and tend to hold their price second hand. Their very open frame design means they aren't as useful as they could be, IMHO, and I sold the one that I had for that reason. For the price I'd maybe hang out for a Hannibal or Patriot. The price you'll pay second hand you'll always recoup come selling time and they look more robust than the ones depicted. Decent racks are like buses, you'll wait for a while then two will come along together. Stick a 'Wanted' ad up, anyone selling may look there first.
