This is mine, did it nearly 14-years ago and still works perfectly. You can buy the correct item from LR but mine was a DIY set-up.
Normal tailgate stripped of all fittings. Pair of hinges mounted to O/S and a pair of brackets on the N/S matched to "up & over catches" mounted on the tub. Swingaway spare wheel carrier takes all the weight of the wheel. Galvanising of the steel liner was done a couple of years ago. Beware. The tailgate is not reinforced for the hinges & brackets so if you aren't careful you could end up crushing the double skin. I used locknuts to ensure this didn't happen and as I said, been on nearly 14-yeards now without any problems. No don't do it Sitting on the tailgate is the most quintessential of Land Rover experiences. Listen to the rumblings of the Disco and RR boys when it was taken away/given back. Having said that I do like the side opening tailgates. I'm sure I've seen some very clever hinge arrangement somewhere else that would allow both if it could be made to fit. Just can't think on what at the moment. |

There's a clever hinge arrangement on the back of Ifor Williams horse trailers, the double doors can be opened as a barn door or as a ramp for loading horses. Mark S

Side hinged tailgates let you walk into the towing hitch much more easily!
I am sure you don't need to be told how I found that out. |

Just an idea but you could always get some spacers made up the same depth as the double skin, fit stainless washers and then tighten away to your heart's content without the fear of crushing anything. I had extras made for my rear crossmember when I fitted my swingaway to prevent just that. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
