clutch
Hi everyone what is the cure for a slipping clutch on a defender 200tdi or is it just a new clutch and how mutch will it cost

Drove a 200tdi for 16 years and never had a slipping clutch. Owing to the way the clutch self adjusts there is no warning before it goes. You MIGHT be lucky enough to find it difficult to engage second gear shortly before it goes but usually with this vehicle it just goes. 70,000 seems to be a sensible figure to expect to change the clutch. Make sure the correct grade oil is used in the gearbox. I got a service done and the gear change was very heavy. The wrong oil was used but going back to the right grade and everything was fine. This gearbox can be very easy to use given the correct oil. The clutch will feel heavier than so called "normal cars" and is nowhere near as light as a Puma Defender. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The cure is a new clutch, the cost depends on how you go about it.

If it is DIY and you just replace the clutch assembly (plate, cover & release bearing) then parts will be around £100 (depending on make) and it will take you a day (assuming no workshop facilities available).
If you decide to make a real job of it while you are there (it is easier to attack some jobs proactively) then you should also consider replacing the crankshaft seal, clutch fork, slave cylinder etc. The cost for parts is only going to be another £50-£70 but you will be safe in the knowedge that these parts aren't going to let you down in the forseeable future.

If you aren't willing or able to attempt this job DIY then your best bet is to ring around half a dozen specialists in your local area and get quotes which include a comprehensive list of the work to be done, the make of parts to be fitted and the warranty. Only then will you be able to make an informed decision about which garage to use. ONE LIFE, GET IT!
