Fitting wing top chequer plate
Guys, I have bought some Patriot wing top chequer plates for my 2007 Puma. They are complete with all the necessary fixings but I am struggling to see how to access the underside of the wings to fit the nuts. The right hand side is ok as I can access through the plastic cover on the wing top but on the left side removing the cover reveals a sealed box with just a drain hole.

Any suggestions?

Ok, am learning. Having looked into this it would seem that I have been supplied rivnuts. So I need to buy a rivnut tool for fixing the nut. This looks like a pop rivet gun I think. Any idea where to buy one and what they should cost? Thanks

You can buy an occasional use quality one from eBay or similar for £20 - £30, although there are much more expensive ones too. Alternatively, there's a sticky on here with instructions on how to make a manual one, which may suffice. Darren

you can get your hands into wing.
use a spanner with a bit of tape to hold the nut while you start it on the thread.
used this method on mine ok Thumbs Up

Just put my complete 3mm checker plate on. Same issue with nuts n' bolts so I did what I've always done; pop riveted the lot. Ten minutes all done. My tea was still warm. And I now have a nice bag of fancy nuts n' bolts.

As my checker is black and I didn't want to lose points at the next concourse d'elegance I dabbed the rivet heads with black paint. There you go.

When I eventually get around to putting some one mine as I was thinking pop rivets rather than nut, bolt/rivnut.

It's not like they'll need to be removed once fitted and also they'll match the rest of the bodywork.

Any reason why they shouldn't be pop'd? Craig Rogers

Given the issues of rusting standard bolts or hidden galvanic corrosion of stainless ones; then ali rivets might be seen as not just expedient but also longer lasting and less damaging.

RIVETS.... RIVNUTS, you must be mad!

If a job is worth doing then it is worth doing properly. Some nice shiny good quality stainless 6mm x 20mm phillips countersunk bolts with stainless nylon nuts and washers.

Then it is just a case of removing the O/s headlight.

Should take no longer than 1HR to do both wing tops. ( Don't forget to paint the drilled edges before fitting the checker plate).

Fitted mine today.Aluminium riv nuts and the specific tool to squeeze them on. I experimented with a few riv nuts using the home made tool shown in the sticky but could not get the consistency to give me the confidence to try on the defender. So plumped for buying the tool and worked fine - slightly trickier on the leading edge of the wing where it slopes down but generally good. In total including a few experiments on some sheet ali and including fitting 2 small plates to the front bumper I spent about 3 hours on this, including painting the bolt heads. I am the first to admit to not being the most proficient at these sort of jobs but am pleased with the result. I was surprised how much give there was in the wing top when drilling.But the 3mm plate will hopefully make all the diference. Standing on the new chequer plate might be one small step for a man but a giant leap for me. Fingers crossed !
