Australia 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
Trailer wiring codes
I would appreciate help with the function of each of the colour coded wires which go into the Puma orange trailer connector. As mentioned in previous posts, this is located in the rear drivers side wheel arch (near the fuel filler).
From what I can see:
Green/brown Left indicator
Green/purple Right indicator
Green/white Brake stop light
Red/black Rear lights
The ones I am struggling with are
Black Earth?
Purple ?
Yellow/red ?
Red/orange ?
Green/red ?

United Kingdom 2003 Defender 90 Td5 HT Epsom Green
I think there is a pre wired plug in the rear drivers side wheel arch. Its behind the rubber flap. The pre wired cable (in the uk anyway) is relatively cheap.

Yep, behind wheel arch drivers side. Pull down and plug in the trailer socket. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Wiring Colour Code Table
Many British designed vehicles use colour coded cables to assist in identifying the various circuits in use. This is an extract from BS-AU7a 1983 Colour Code for Vehicle Wiring, from the British Standards Institution, 2 Park St., London W1A 2BS.
(Note that these colour codes may not apply directly to older cars. For example, the wipers on cars up to 1980 (at least) are not on a separate fuse circuit, so they are not orange, but green. Check the schematic for your car to be certain. - cak)

Many of the usual suspects carry Lucas bullet connectors. A few carry reproduction wiring harnesses. But very few carry the properly color-coded wire, and most of those only carry a small selection of colors and sizes.

You can't use any of the UK trailer plugs in Australia. The only way to wire up a trailer plug here is by splicing into each wire individually (my auto-electrician left the original connector in place). Hence the importance of knowing which wire operates which light. 2007 Defender 110

Could you not cut the uk plug off the end? Then wire up your type of plug you need? Or do you need more than the functions we have?

Still doesnt help with the wiring colours though lol.

Many thanks for the replies and help.
The reason I was seeking the colour codes is that I want to replace the original trailer connector. I have not been able to match that connector in Australia. And while a genuine trailer kit is available from Land Rover for some A$300 it will not match our Australian trailer sockets as our coding system is different, and will have to be modified anyway. Rather than cut into wires I will replace the connector all together and make up my own cable and Australian plug.
The wiring colour code table posted by bjartin has been most handy as it confirms the main colour codes.
Interestingly, Land Rover don't seem to be useing the tracer codes from that table.
From testing the wires into the original trailer connector I am happy with direction, brake and lamp wires and can proceed. I wanted to connect up for electric trailer brakes and the Purple main wire seems to be part of that.
I note that wiring diagrams are being discussed on in another topic area and will try to obtain one.
In the meantime I left my parking lights on for a few days after tracing the wires and now have a dead flat battery.
On a happier note it is raining here and my Puma has got wet. That's twice now since I got it seven months ago.
