I have a Mantec carrier on my 04 110 and it rattles quite considerably when the rear door is closed. (I only viewed this stationary as I found it too difficult to check when I am driving )
It seems the rattle comes from the piston, which is quite loose in the bore when the door is in the closed position, but as you open the door the level of play disappears. I did dismantle the carrier a few months ago to clear up some rust which had appeared in the cracked powder coating. I believe I reassembled it in the right order i.e. with the nuts on the spindle sitting either side of the bracket which is attached to the door. I have checked all the nuts and bolts for tightness and there is no play in the main hinges. Unfortunately I don't have the original installation instructions as it was fitted to the vehicle when I bought it, so judging how far down the piston spindle one should place to securing nuts was guesswork on my part on reaseembly. Can anyone tell me if the rattle is characteristic of this carrier? If it isn't is there any adjustment I can make to reduce the play? Failing that, does anyone have any installation instructions which they could scan and send me? |

And it will be fine for a bit, then require adjusting again I added copper slip into the piston on mine which made a noticeable difference. The rattle is nowhere near as metallic or noticeable

Unfortunately, you will find just about everyone who has this make has the same problem.
Mine has been on for 6 months and has had to be re-tightened 3 times. The last time it was brilliant and just as I was getting used to a pleasurable lack of noise it came back after just 1,800 miles. Have decided the only way to get rid of the noise is to replace it with another make. |

I have a Aussie Kaymar installed for 4 years now. Nothing coming loose, nothing budged, no creaking hinges, no rust.....
It bolts on to the rear crossmember/chassis, no drilling in the door or rear side panel which is important, and it can carry the heaviest of loads as when locked, it actually locks with a handle in the other side of the crossmember/chassis. It also has the wheel in exactly the same position as the original door mounted carrier. Top quality is proven in my opinion. The only drawback for some may be that it opens/closes separately from the door, so it is a two stage approach. But I never saw this as a problem. There are some pics in my gallery for those who could be interested. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Obviously not all. I had mine on for over 7 years and there wasn't any issues, with heavy 255/8516's on most of the time and lots of off road use and knocks. |

I resorted to loctiting my nuts on there in the end, since then there have been no rattles, squeaks or anything else.
I think the main advantage over a spare wheel carrier that does not open with the back door, is that in an emergency i can get out through the back door from the inside if required. Regards, Mark |

Thanks for your replies guys.
One thing I've already learnt is that the rubber gasket has gone astray, so I currently trying to get a new one from Mantec. Otherwise it looks like a reassembly job, tighten the nuts and if they come loose, re-tighten. At the price of replacing the carrier then an irritating rattle on a Land Rover can be lived with, as long as the wheel stays on the vehicle. |

What does the rattle sound like, I brought a 110 with a Mantec carrier and have a rattle from the back I can not find. Mine sounds a bit like stones in a hoover pipe. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW

The one I have is easy enough to reproduce. Just stand at the back of the Land Rover, with the door closed and push and pull on your tyre. Now imagine that 10-15 times per minute when travelling over bumpy ground. (It doesn't rattle when then door is open as the piston is partially withdrawn) |

I know this is an old thread but having the same issue with a newly fitted Land Rover branded Mantec carrier and have found a simple fix.
Problem I found was the gap between the slot in the wheel carrier frame and the threaded shaft on the piston from the door plate. Click image to enlarge Simple fix ,wrap a 3.5mm wide cable tie around the threaded shaft on the piston and it should pack out the gap stopping the rattle!
