It's also worth checking the manufacturing date that is stamped on the tyres. Car tyres should be changed at 10 yrs, no point buying a brand new tyre that's been sat on the shelf for 2 yrs.
Depends where & how (temp, light) a tyre has been stored. Retreads may last less long, but if a premium tyre has been stored in an enviroment where its not subject to sunlight & temperature extremes, it should last. Sounds like I got a bargain £8 a tyre fitted and balanced. I did sell my old tyres so was not charged for disposal.
Regarding tyre shelf life :- as stated its all about how they are stored. Had a set of Bridgestone Potenzas fitted to the wife's toy, which lasted 12 months. They had to be changed due to the side walls perishing !! They were fitted by Volkswagen UK and were less than 2 years old.
