Tickover drops to 6-700rpm accompanied by loud diesel knock
I have search various posts but not found specific reference to this problem, and wonder whether I should ignore the fault until the next service or get it looked at sooner.

Periodically whilst ticking over (engine hot) the revs drop from 900rpm odd down to about 6-700 accompanied by a loud diesel knock. The truck vibrates and rocks as if not firing on all cyclinders. If I blip the throttle it goes but comes back again within 10-15 seconds. Its seems to be an intermitent problem at the moment, but is starting to reoccur more frequently. The trucks now done 21K miles since October 08. I had the first 12,000 mile service back in June. and seems to run fine otherwise.

Sounds like the same as what happened with mine- they changed the EGR valve and since I have had no problems.

But as above ^^^ get it in as soon as possible......better safe than sorry Smile

Or is it injector lock up or whatever its called, the fix is (or was) a new engine. Check your VIN No if its before this Vin# 9A767162 you may need a new engine.

Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Last Modified: 21-JUL-2008 09:44
Category: Engine
Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

Makes me wonder why I bother treating the engine with respect (6K oil/filter changes etc) for it to be potentially binned anyway Shocked . Vin number is 9A768647 so some 1500 later and hopefully therefore won't require such a drastic solution as engine replacement.

I visit this site quite regularly and have been appraised of the vehicles seemingly numerous short comings, but todate have suffered absolutely no mechanical maladies in 18 months and 21,000 miles. I have been waiting for the imminent self implosion and maybe it’s just about to detonate.

Hey I won't be too negative until the dealers had a look. I'll let you know what is done/recommended by the dealer in due course.
