Is this Puma a Good Buy?
Hi all

I'm in the market for a Puma and there's a very nice one that I can get - 2008 Landrover Defender 90 - 46,000km.

However, based on the repair history below, is this a good buy or will it just give me endless troubles?

The service history reads as follows:

First service - 17/12/2008 - Land Rover Cape Town - 17188km
Second service - 22/07/2009 - Land Rover Cape Town - 42072km

Service intervals = 1 year/20 000km
Standard Factory Warranty: 02/01/2008 - 01/01/2011

Repair History:

Remote not working
Replaced gearbox
Replaced clutch kit
Replaced rear wheel speed sensor
Replaced vacuum pump

Difficult to decide!
Naks,

Difficult to decide - If I was to say to you "Yes it's an excellent buy go for it!" Then you have problems later I would be in the firing line.
Generally all those faults have featured on various site member's vehicles (I have suffered with two of them myself) nevertheless a 2008 vehicle with nearly 30,000 miles on the clock should have had by now most of the problems ironed out. One would suggest as well it should still have another 12 months or so of manufacturer's warranty remaining. The previous owner did go 5,000km passed it's due servicing interval. If warranty is still extant any more problems will be covered by that! If so;-

I shall stick my 'nads' on the chopping block and say "Fill yer boots and go for it!"
As a footnote it would be interesting to know how much in GBP it is being sold for!

I also thought this was weird, so I checked with LRSA. They confirm the warranty is still in place. I agree that by now all the major issues should have been ironed out.

It seems the previous owner bought it, kitted it out and drove to Ethiopia and back, and then moved to the UK.

This is the vehicle in question. Price is quite high for this year/mileage, although it is kitted out fairly extensively. Still though, R339K for a 2007 model with 46Kkm... (only registered in 2008)?

I've also got options on a new basic Puma and Dec 09 Fire & Ice with a few options, both working out to R250K with my trade-in.

Lots of goodies!
Naks,

As far as I can see the vehicle has been loaded with lots of extra goodies. I can see at least a couple of thousand pounds, I know that you cannot expect a great return on extras but paying a bit extra for the vehicle pictured with what it's got on it in my view would be worth it! Looks a clean tidy model.

28k pounds Shocked the wife (who is a Saffa!) says cars are generally more expensive over there.
Maybe ask some of the other SA members on here as they will probably be a bet for advice.

Indeed!

A brand new Puma 90 without any options or extras costs R352K, approx 29,000 pounds

I paid R329K for my Jan 2008 registered 110 (built in 2007) with the following extras:
Front Runner Roof Rack
BFG muds
Bullbar
Side Runners
High L J
Wiring to Rear
Rubber Mats all Round
LR spot Lights
Checker Plate sills and sides.
Steering Guard

Mine was a demo and had 2600 km's on the clock.
If I were you, try and contact previous owners and get history. Also make double sure about the warranty as I had a fight with dealers when going over the annual by 1 month to get the warranty re-instated and the selling dealer had to pay the R400 fine for not explaining and making me sign the service book.

Yep, but the dealer keeps saying the owner is overseas - this whole deal is looking very shady.

I offered him R280K, but he said the owner owes more than that still.

We will probably end up going for this one:

2009 Fire& Ice demo 6000km Price with discount & Trade-in: R250000

Second Fuel Tank?
Naks,

Just out of curiosity what looks like a second fuelling point on the right hand side, has it had an auxilliary fuel tank fitted?

The deal does sound a bit 'dodgy!' The fact that 'the owner owes more than R280K' shouldn't affect the asking price. The vehicle's true worth is what YOU or any other potential customer are prepared to pay for it, not what the previous owner owes on tick.

Then again it could well be that it is the finance company that may be the legal owners - be careful and dig deep!

Indeed, it looks that way. Probably a setup with a pump mechanism. Personally I prefer the rear right fender extra tank with a gravity feed into the main tank.

Indeed!

Just got a call from LR CTN about a 2009 Silver Demo (no extras) with 4000km going for R310K. With an R85K trade-in on my D2, that doesn't sound too bad. I would prefer a clean one and then I can kit it over time the way I like it.

Ok, if I have this right the other option available to you is to go with an authorised dealer and obtain a clean demonstrator with only 4,000km on it for £3,500 less than the price of a new one!

This is against one that is 'fully loaded' with extras has a dubious individual selling it with suspicious excuses for an asking price and won't reveal what exactly it will cost you other than 'more than R280K because the owner owes more than that!'

For our English viewers the ex-demonstrator will cost you £1,666 more than the one that is 'of dubious descent' and has an extra year's warranty and 38,000kms less on the clock.

If it's peace of mind you're after the ex demonstrator comes out on top for me! Then again I've already got one and that was an ex-demonstrator too! Naks my dear fellow it has to be your choice.....For me it's a 'no brainer!'

*aaaargh*

yes, indeed.

But even then, consider this:

I have been talking to 2 different sales persons at LR CTN. One of them offered me R100K on my Disco2, the other one offered me only R85K. Go figure!

So my choices now are as follows:

mileage price discount trade-in Final Warranty
2010 White new 0 R 355,000.00 R 15,000.00 R 100,000.00 R 240,000.00 Jan 2013
2009 Fire & Ice demo 6000 R 379,000.00 R 29,000.00 R 100,000.00 R 250,000.00 Nov 2012?
2009 Silver demo 4000 R 310,000.00 R 85,000.00 R 225,000.00 Nov 2012?
2010 Fire & Ice demo 1700 R 365,000.00 R 85,000.00 R 280,000.00 Nov 2012?

So far the 09 Silver demo is looking good Cool

Agree! The orange of the Fire and Ice is to me a lovely colour but not worth R55K extra. Thumbs Up Now go get it! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

If you want a spec'd up one then get the first one you were looking at. It doesn't sound that dodgy to me (who cares where the previous owner has gone if it's a LR approved vehicle then they carry the can). It might be that the dealer is selling it on behalf of the previous owner, in which case there will be a minimum price set.

However, if you're not fussed about the extras (it is completely customised for overlanding) then don't go for it. It carries a high price for a standard 90 and you won't get the money back on the extras. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition
