Get it stripped, dipped and repowdercoated. Less toil and probably cheaper than buying the materials! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I just made myself a 10mm 4 inch square bumper on extended brackets which take it well away from the bodywork . 100% galvanise but it's a NO on the powder coating as stone chips and weather just make it peal and bubble away and you would only be doing it again soon enough . After galvanising I etch primed and gave 3 coats of black smooth hammerite , when dry I then sprayed with smooth hammerite spray matt finish , done . You still get the stone chips but a touch up matt brush dissapears those . I'm not a fan of the powder coating sorry .

Ive often thought about etch priming & painting my galvanised crossmember, sliders & bumper in black. But at the same time I dont want to spoil it incase I do it wrong!!

sand blasted, galvanised, etch primer and then about four coats of Plasticote looks brill, had no issues this winter, had Mr BMW driver catch the side of the bumper the weekend trying to park, ripped his rear bumper off at the corner, and only scuffed the paint a little on mine, was dreading looking but was amazed, a little t-cut has removed some of the scratch marks

Nothing to go wrong mate I my galvanised tree sliders also had the same treatment with spray silver hammered hammerite rather than powder coating . Make sure your bumper is satin or Matt , gloss is to shiny . Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |

I guess the essential part is the etch priming? Did you do this with aerosol? |

No spray , it's a blue liquid acid . Brush it on and your galvanised metal will turn black . Give it a good wash then apply your paint . Your local steel works or hardware should give you a cup full .
