Yep. I've had the same problem towing a caravan. I also tow a horse box but that has never been a problem. I suspect its to do with speed as towing a caravan with one of these Defenders is easy to get to 60 and above. The vortex created by the wind off the front of the caravan bends the mudflap back into the tyre. I've only ever had it happen on the near side though. After it happened the first time I riveted a strip of lead along the bottom of the rear flaps (about 1 inch wide). This hasn't worked as it's done it again recently and completely shagged the flap! So I will have to buy a new flap and rivet an even bigger lump of lead on it to see if that works. I tried to get LR to replace it under the warranty but they said no as I'd messed with them (The flaps not LR!) fair enough I suppose!

On a 110, how about hooking a chain onto the bottom of the mudflap and then to the underneath of the rear crossmember?

I think because most horse trailers have that pointy bit at the front, one doesn't get the vortex effect. I've never had it with a horsebox either and tow A LOT!

thats happened to me twice when towing the caravan. Each time I managed to pull over and free it before much damage was done to the flap. It makes a very audible noise although maybe not in the many Def2 vehicles that are plastered in Dynamat these days !

How odd - I've towed the caravan a lot last year, at all sorts of speeds, and didn't ever suffer this.

Must be influenced by the specific caravan you tow and the shape of the nose. Mine's a Bailey and they have fairly flat noses. Also towing with a 110.

We've just bought a new Disco as well so that's been doing the majority of the towing this year (funny - my wife seems to think going away in the Disco makes for a more relaxing holiday. Fortunately the kids still like the Defender). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Sorry I know it's an old thread but I've got this problem too
On my 90 whilst towing the caravan it decides to eat the rear mud flaps, mainly the n/s, don't really want to have to chain the flaps up every time so I suppose I'll have to stiffen them up somehow? Bit of an annoying problem to have
