what should be an acceptable starting voltage?

AFAIK the open circuit voltage (fully charged, room temperature, no load and left standing for 1/2 hour or more) should be above 12.5 Volts. When the alternator is charging, it should be around 14 Volts. If by starting voltage you mean the minimum it drops to, that's hard to say. Probably about 10.5 - 11 Volts when you're cranking the engine over.
The problem with older batteries is that although they hold 12+ Volts for a while when fully charged, they lose it much faster than newer ones when standing or under load - no stamina That's why it's also good to test a battery again after it's been standing a week or so. mine will start with 10.5v showing
the Numax ones i run are on occasional use vehicles. Optima are good but over priced in my opinion. ask SimonR from X-Eng about Batts if you want the science answer. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Mine too, so it's not huge issue However, one problem (for some of us) is that things like inverters, fridges, chargers, LED lights etc. generally have under-voltage protection so they cut out very quickly when the engine's off Tell someone you love them today because life is short. This thread may be of interest, especially SGH's picture - a battery "comfort indicator".
Thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17923.html Mines this one: Click image to enlarge I've extended the standard wire, so it now sits behind the passenger seat, permanently connected to the battery. It's easily accessible for plugging in a (solar or mains-powered) charger, or for plugging-in accessories without removing the passenger seat
It also has a plug-in for a CTEK charger, although I have purchased a solar charger, and attached a CTEK connector, so I can charge it in the sun when it's not being used for a few weeks. I can also run accessories, and see when the battery becomes dangerously low (although so far it's started easily even when "red"). £10 at Halfrauds (and a bit cheaper by googling) http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...yId_255205 The solar charger was about £40 from Maplims, it's rated at 12w, it's about a metre x 30cm, and charges the battery in one day in the sun. It would be ideal for camping etc, if you were running load off the battery, but wanting to recharge... A few years ago, my son (and I ) spent an enjoyable week shamelessly destroying 2 new car batteries as part of his IB phys/chem project. We measured their capacities and abilities to recover over many hours by repeatedly running them down and fast/slow charging, freezing, refilling and using pulse conditioners. Great fun
It is remarkable both how much you can knacker a battery by running it down a few times but also how well you can recondition it and how much starting capacity is still left as long as it's warm and fully charged *Edit* this is the sealed one - 4 years old and recharged several days ago. Voltage this morning is... Well after 5 years my battery having been nursed for the last few weeks through the cold weather it is 'terminally' (excuse the pun) ill. Have decided to bite the bullet and splash out on an Odyssey PC1700.
Having researched it's amazing when you know the product you want how many people try to talk you out of it for an alternative and the price difference on offer up to £60 difference. Not exactly 'talk me out of it' (should have chosen my words better) but steer me elsewhere. Phoned a company that advertised 'price matching' on batteries. "Unfortunately Sir we don't have any PC1700s in stock, however we do have a Bosch or Varta battery that would suit your needs!" Job jobbed! Quick call to well known 4x4 supplier in the West Country who did have stock on the shelf and battery will be delivered tomorrow! Was happy with their price but thought I'd may be able to barter a deal elsewhere perhaps! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Is there a way the landy will tell you or indicate your battery is too low (ie replace). Such as the globe plug light not disappearing or something like that. A general warning?

Not mine! Just 'chattered' when I tried to start it! Charged the battery and away she went. Week later same problem with low terminal voltage when I measured it! So you won't go for a Numax leisure or Optima yellow top? Any reason why not? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I don't have the time or inclination to do a great deal of digging. Knew others had used Odyssey PC1500s on dual battery set-ups and had good reports of no problems in extreme conditions. Read the write up on them and with an 'expected life' of between 8-12 years was good enough for me. No doubt the Numax or Optimas are excellent batteries but TBH they didn't even come to mind. I usually hate shopping but the Odyssey is bright red, maybe it was a 'colour thing' as I do like red. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Fitted battery today! The Odyssey PC 1700 is advertised as a Defender Battery Replacement. It does indeed fit but required a little 'fettling' to do so. The positive terminal has a 500 amp mega fuse attached of a 't-piece' terminal. In the original position the 't-piece' is not long enough to reach the terminal from the end position it fits to the battery. Dismantled the mega fuse assembly 'dremelled' the top to facilitate fit and spun the t-piece 180 degress to give it about an extra 10mm reach. I then replaced the long battery tray securing screws for two short stainless steel allen bolts to prevent shorting on the t-piece in the new intended position. I then fitted the positive terminal orientated so it fits to the terminal from the side of the battery rather than the end (basically rotating the terminal clockwise 90 degrees from oroginal fitment position). Hope this makes sense but a quick battery replacement turned out to be a couple of hours to do! May help anyone else considering an Odyssey PC 1700.
