smooth and rough
Not sure if this is just me or similar to troubles already mentioned and assoiciated with water in fuel etc.

Sometimes, but its more exception than the rule the car seems really good, smooth and relatively quiet - this seems to happen more when its cold but not always, and I'd suggest its possibly only 10% of the time.
The rest of the time it can sound rough and almost as if its pinking when its warm?

Yes I get the same taken mine back to dealers as had engine management light on they check it out with the laptop and say it's the fuel valve.

It goes in Tuesday to have new one fitted said it will stop the engine sounding rough like you say "pinking"

Only sometimes when cold if mine is going to do it, dose it at the same place on which every road I take from home at about a mile from home, then after it's warm up it fine quiet and smooth.

Will keep you posted after have new fuel valve fitted see if it dose the job. It's in deals for 2 to 3 day as roof and windscreen is leaking I have a pond in N/S foot well so should get it back Thursday

Lately with mine its getting rlly bad Evil or Very Mad

I start it and it goes very rough in idle and i do mean rough, the rev counter goes up and down in idle and the engine sounds like its going to stop or just give up in a big bang Big Cry

But once its heated up after 5 minutes everything is fine Rolling Eyes

And to make matters worse its just been to the dealer and i told them it does that but they didnt fix it and i even have to drive around with a vaccum pump that is leaking oil Evil or Very Mad

I think i'm gonna go mad anytime soon if this doesnt get cured i pay good money and i dont give a Censored about bolts coming loose and water inside but i do want it to be reliable and mechanically sound Crying or Very sad

Dave, I'll be interested to know how you get on.
At least your leak is on the passenger side. MY feet get wet when its very wet, wouldn't mind so much if it were the passengers Very Happy

I change down a gear the other day and give it a few too many revs.....my god did it sound rough........I thought for a second something fallen off (somethng minor like the entire engine).

May be I should just sell it and buy a push bike?

Mine has been like this for the past 12 months, plus I have issues with suddenly going off under its own steam. The dealers can't not find what is wrong with it at all. Last wek as I left work and aproching a roundabout it suddenly took off and I went straight onto the roundabout then stopped I thought I was going to die as it was on the main A6. I should say I paniced a bit and hit the foot break but it would not stop but if I had simply hit the clutch it would have been fine and stopped.

The dealers have told me they are waiting for lR to coem back to them and have requested it go to Gaydon. Not holding my breath.

Mine has had new engine, 2 faulty fuel switches replaced and still runs like Censored from cold. Fine as it warms up. Goes back again on the 17th as engine light recently came on after start -up.

I think the whole common rail fuel system needs to be changed !

Nige, mines almost the opposite.
When I went out today nice and smooth while it was cold, I have to admit I didn't go far enough for it to warm up, but the problem as far as I'm concerned is more noticeable when its hot not cold?

Mine is great when it first starts until it warms up and so after 10 -15 mins it starts to be a lot rougher. Sometimes the amount of clatter is just aweful. My dealer just thinks I am talking crazy.

The weather has started to cool down here and it's no better so it must just be the engine management changing the settings after the engine is up to temp that causes the problem.

all I can say is mine seems to be running really well at the moment.......

I'm still a little nervous that its not going to last long but having given the MAF and MAP sensors a clean (the MAP several times) things have improved greatly.

so far as I'm concerned I can't think of any good reason why not to go get some carb cleaner and give them both a clean (hopefully if there's a good reason not to someone will say) as its only a 5 min job to do both.

first90 do you have an paper of air filter or oil / cotton re-usable type and do you keep you revs very low? these are the only obvious 2 things I can think of that may cause the problem I had (a very sooted up MAP sensor) - the other thing that hopefully wont be an issue for yourself - I had my injectors and pump re-calibrated / learnt - assuming these were previously wrong then I guess this could also have had a detrimental effect? - good luck.

I have a paper filter and it generally gets driven fairly gently as unless I am doing a long trip to get off road it is only doing very short trips around town on the weekend. It barely has time to warm up. Excluding off road I prob only do 40kms a week in it. Have done 17,000kms in 2.5 years when you add in the long drives.

I have scheduled servicing included from my dealer but as I find my way around it they are clearly doing what they think it needs given the low kms rather than following the book for 1 and 2 year services. When it goes in for its rear diff spline warranty repair i am going to have a chat with 'em.

It does seem to be throwing more sooty smoke on startup too actually.... I might tackle those sensors.

I've never really listened to what people say but may recommend that the engines need to be 'driven' and all this low rev stuff perhaps can soot up sensors such as the MAP sensor.

hopefully having only used paper filters your MAP sensor will be fine. the other sensor located the othe side of the engine of the other hand I would definately have a look at that a give it a clean. all you need is a 7mm spanner, spray carb cleaner (or similar) and 2 minutes.

would love to know how you get on.

I have probably not revved it much in the last year as I have learnt to drive it off road better. Early on I used to just stomp on it and hope for the best.

I will check this weekend and get back to you.
