"Wheels on the offside not moving at all, and turning circle is just the same as normal!" When I use the diff on the rear axle on my tractor unit there is a noticeable difference in handling when turning! Love in this order; Burnley FC, Defender, Kids, Wife, LOL |

Thats sounds right, when you engage difflock it only locks the centre diff not the axle diffs.
For instance driving up a slippy slope without difflock you could grind to a halt with one spinning. Driving up a slippy slope with difflock in then when you grind to a halt 2 wheels will be spinning one on each axle. I wouldn't recomend driving with the difflock in on grippy surfaces as you could damage it specially when trying to turn.. You could put the difflock in and get someone to drive round you on a gravel surface you should see or hear the inside wheel scrabble as it catches up with the outer wheel which is travelling further. If you know all this already then I apologise Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

It is a great sight to see one wheel on each axle turn nicely up in the air, when the ones that should be turning to get the vehicle unstuck are motionless.
Also a bit frustrating when you call a friend for advice and you're being told: "did you lock the dif? That should do it!". Well, NO! Pretty useless really. The Mercedes G class has the 3 dif locks. Now to get that one stuck, that must be pretty hard! Boldly going nowhere Discovery 3 after a Defender 110 Crew Cab TD4 and a 1964 SIIA 88 Regular. |

The mercedes needs them because it has nowhere near the axle articulation that the Land Rover relies on Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

The diff lock is a centre diff lock in the transfer box. When locked it forces 50% of the drive forwards and 50% to the rear. When the drive gets to the front or rear axles it then splits 25% to each wheel. This is the case when the traction is equal for all wheels. If you jack one of the front and one of the rear wheels off the ground the vehicle will not drive away even with the centre diff locked.

I have had them up against each other in the flesh and that statement is a load of old coblers....and why not save the £20K on the price of the production vehicle and spend either £3K on KAM lockers front and rear or £1K on ARB Lockers front and rear which will make the LR a WAY more capable vehicle. Last time I checked the only people who drive the G-wagons are either: a. Germans.....you will never find a German willlingly driving something other than a German car. b. People with too much money who want a 4x4 and a AMG badge. Glyn |

If someone offered me either an Amazon or a D4 I know which one I would pick personally. Just have a look at AndrewS's gallery on Disco3 site to see what a D3 or 4 is capable of.
Or should it be up against a TDV8 Range Rover. Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

I think it,s fine mate. You could do the test I suggested or if you can put two front or two rear wheels on rollers, without difflock the two wheels on the rollers will rotate, stop engage the difflock and it should drive off the rollers
Do a bit of research on aftermarket locking diffs Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |
