Lots of choices. I wouldn't go into it determined to get better fuel consumption, as there are lots of variables (mainly your right foot!) - but done proper you will certainly see an improvement in torque and ultimately driveability. The first thing I would to do is get your Land Rover checked to ensure everything is working correctly on your Defender (not just a fault code read - but look at live data) - there is no point in tuning any vehicle that has faults - and make sure that it is on the latest standard Land Rover software. Land Rover made lots of changes over the life span of the 2.4, and the latest software is the best version. Following on for this – make sure your fuel injectors and fuel pump set up are set up correctly. I see lots of 2.4 that have never, ever, been set up correctly - mainly by the dealers (even ones that have full LR service history). You need to make sure that whoever you use for any performance upgrades can redo the injector pump learn and a pilot injector learn. This is a must, and anyone that says it isn't important is talking rubbish. The specialist will need proper diagnostic kit - not just some cheap hand held tool. Once everything has been checked, and your Defender is working as per designed (this applies to all engines - not just Tdci) – then I would look at a performance enhancement. As well as a few other tweaks. Any exhaust modifications away from standard should be matched with aftermarket calibration changes… or if you go too mad, you do risk damaging the turbo. Regardless of whom you use to carry out any performance upgrades, make sure you know what you are actually getting… and not just a figure plucked from the sky.
