Possibly handbrake?

Possibly bushes. The suspension trailing arms, where they meet the chassis, often wear, lie at the side of it not underneath, get someone carefully move forewords and back, you will see the arms move in the chassis 'ears' if the bushes have gone 'breasts aloft'.

It,s always difficult to diagnose a noise you have not heard but a few possibilities are front u/j of rear propshaft or worn splines on rear propshaft sliding joint or if you,re really unlucky worn splines on gearbox output shaft that transmits the drive into the transfer box (this was common on early R380 gearboxes) but most would have been sorted by now.Good luck and welcome to defender ownership. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Check the balljoint on the top of the rear axle.

Is the diff lock disengaged ie is the small lever all the way to the right? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

It doesn't always do it which is frustrating. But whilst lying in bed last night it I was thinking it usually occurs after the handbrake has been applied and as I said in the original post it's only when moving off forwards after having gone backwards. But Yobbie said it could be the handbrake which got me thinking. Could the drum/shoe/brake arrangement on the prop be sticking and suddenly releasing making the bang - and we're talking about a loud 'bang' not a 'knock' or a 'click' or a 'thud'

I doubt it's the bushes then... there's no vibration when driving?

My money is on the handbrake shoes as most likely, or gearbox splines worn.
To test the handbrake, remove the rear prop where it meets the transfer box and remove the handbrake drum. Reattach the prop and try to recreate the symptoms - but remember that you don't have a handbrake! To inspect the gearbox splines, take off the 6 bolts that hold the PTO cover plate in place and you will be able to see the splines. New gearbox is the only solution to this problem Pic below showing the rear output drive from the transfer box and the PTO cover on the left. Handbrake would be my number one culprit. Anything else that bangs like that usually signifies that something has broken, so it's unlikely to bang again. Darren

Eliminate the hand brake by making a point of not using it for a few days, park in gear, chock wheels etc - If the noise disappears then you have your answer, and if it still happens then you know it's not your hand brake !

OK, so I dismantled the brake drum for inspection and clean. Things inside were not too bad - a little grubby and oily but not a lot. Took it all apart and gave it a good clean. I did notice that the handbrake cable 'lug' wasn't located in the actuator lever correctly and thought that this might have something to do the 'bang' i.e. the shoes were somehow getting snagged because they couldn't release properly and when they did - bang..., I dunno it was just a thought. BUT, when I rotated the drum after re-assembly in an anti-clockwise direction with the rear prop shaft removed - it would occasionally 'jam' I couldn't turn it at all. The Diff was not engaged (at least not according to the lever position). It would only un-jam by rotating it a little way in a clockwise direction. Something tells me the Diff is engaging slightly and when it unlocks suddenly there is a loud bang. I should have also said in my original post that my Diff warning light constantly flickers on and off. I assumed it was a switch problem but now I'm not so sure and perhaps the light is trying to tell me something.
