This morning I received another call from the same lady I had previously spoken to @ LR customer services which went something like this...
"Hello Mr M, how are you today?" "Well thanks, how are you?" "I'm fine thank you. Mr M following my call yesterday I want to talk to you again about the issue with the side bar parts on your Defender." "Ok." "As you know I received the photos from the dealer and as I know nothing about the parts I referred them on to the people who deal with these things. I have now had a response from them and I have to tell you that Land Rover is still not going to be able to cover the cost of replacement parts." "Oh yes, why is that?" "Well Mr M, the issue with the parts is surface corrosion and surface corrosion is not covered under warranty." "I see. Can you please explain why other people have had the same parts replaced under warranty?" "I know nothing about that Mr M so cannot possibly comment." "I see, in that case can you please explain why other items such as mudflap brackets and headlamp bezels have just been replaced by my dealer as requested by me under warranty and that this was done due to surface rust. Not only that but the front bumper is also being replaced in a couple of weeks when he vehicle is being returned to have corrosion around the windscreen frame rectified under warranty and that the replacement is due to flaking finish and surface rust?" "I know nothing about those parts Mr M so cannot comment on why or under what circumstances they were replaced by your dealer." "Can you tell me if you are still classifying the side bars as 'accessories'?" [Which is what she had said before] "Sorry Mr M but I do not know anything about the parts, I can only pass on the decision that was made by the people who do." "Ok. Do you have email facilities?" "Yes Mr M I do." "Ah good. In that case if I provide you with my address will you please confirm the decision and the reason behind it via email to me and I will then take it from there." "Yes certainly Mr M, let me have your address please and I will do that for you." "My address is as follows ............ Do you mind if I have your address and so I can mail you confirmation of my address just to be sure you have it correctly" "Not at all Mr M, my email address is .......". "Thank you." "Thank you Mr M, I will get that email to you." That was this morning and I have heard nothing since. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Aye, I'm hoping she will be true to her word and commit to the written word, however if I don't hear back within a few days then it will be a hardcopy contact from me to someone higher up the ladder. Steve.

Just to add that it is stuff like this and what I saw on the 2.2 loaner I had last week that will make me consider all the harder whether I want to commit a chunk of cash for another new one. Steve.

in the warrantydetails does it mention that surface corrosion is not covered as my understanding is/was that there is a corrosion warranty and if surface rust and flaking paint is not corrosion what the fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuck is it ???

The breaking down or destruction of a material, especially a metal, through chemical reactions. The most common form of corrosion is rusting, which occurs when iron combines with oxygen and water.

The stuff below is from a land rover website ...............
Paints And Surface Warranty Anti-Corrosion Warranty Should any part of the bodywork of the vehicle be perforated by rust corrosion, the panels affected by the perforation will be repaired or replaced by any Land Rover Importer, completely free of charge, regardless of any change in vehicle ownership. The Anti-Corrosion warranty begins at the same time as the vehicle warranty and continues for a period of six years. The term "perforation" means a hole that penetrates through the bodywork caused by corrosion from the inside or underside as a result of faulty manufacture or materials. Paints and Surface Warranty Should the paint surface of the vehicle body require attention due to a defect in material or applications, any necessary repairs will be performed completely free of charge by any Land Rover Importer. This applies regardless of any change in vehicle ownership during the period of cover. The paint and surface warranty cover begins at the same time as the vehicle warranty and continues for 3 years (unlimited mileage), and there is a 6 year unlimited mileage corrosion (perforation) warranty. |

With the RR, my claim was rejected as the issue was a result of and I quote 'rusting from the outside and not rusting from the inside out'
Now how a thin metal leading edge with a basic black finish could rust in any way other than standard corrosion but it seems the Dealers and LR are in a world to themselves at times. |

Just before my 90 turned 3 yrs old I had it in for the final warranty service and pointed out all of the rusty bits. All changed except for the side bars which are on back order and due in by April. They did say they would have to check the side bars were a factory fitment at new, which they were, and once confirmed they wanted to check for damage causing the rust [none] and then they confirmed they would be changed under warranty. And this is a reason I'd never have another landrover. I had similar issues which were (in the end) resolved in a professional way by one of the managers - MOG, I've pm'ed you her email address.

May I ask if this is a 'meet in the middle' compromise or are they honouring the warranty in toto and swapping them out for you?
Either way it's a result but a shame it took so much of your time! ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I've been told that the decision not to replace them due to surface corrosion was correct but as a gesture of goodwill etc etc.... Steve.
