well i guess you would get market value of your vehical and buy a nearly new one, also i guess from the sound of the damage to the vehical you discribed the chassis would have been damaged, which means it was no longer a defender but some seats and some body pannels attached to scrap metal, very sad but true.

To be honest thats nothing new really.
There maybe slightly more to the crash but its so common now - there are a few things to be done, but essentially insurance companys right off a significant number now against repairing them (especially as repairs are problematic and expensive) I had a disco written off (hit whilst parked on a friends drive!) only to do with cost, damage was to: Wind, Radiator, Door, Bonnet, Front slam panel/bumper, rear bumper and all the minor bits - drove ok to put rounf the back (obvious wheel issues) chassis was straight £11k to fix! 4 quotes...write off, £16k paid £18k ish required to buy equivelant but that was 100% no fault. My TD5 90 is an insurance write off too.
Click image to enlarge And yes this is the damaged side. I don't know what happened as I bought it this way cheap. But it looks to me that it slit in a deep gully with brown water and on the other side was a tree that damaged the roof and the top off the door. The ECU wasn't working and was brown inside and in the ecu box under the seat was quit a lot off dried up mud. The battery side was reasonable clean at least no dried up mud just some sheep , bullets, needles and other farm trash. As it is an insurance write off there are no reg papers with it so I can't get it licenced on it's own chassis.
