I've not heard of this before. Is it possible that your viscous fan is drawing too much cold air in? I know that mine won't get itself up to temperature on a cold day on tickover (can't pre-warm the car for the missus).
One thing you could do is cover over the radiator and see whether that makes any difference. I assume you've never seen it in warm conditions. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Thanks guys - i think you are confirming my concerns.
It gets up to temperature fine and has in all previous conditions (mid way) even in scotland at -9. But your correct i wondere if the viscus was sticking on OR that it ran it when stationary, but it was so cold it cooled the engine (although the viscus should have stopped?) Ill add it to the warranty list! Mike |

At these temperatures, the engine will cool down at tickover. I once left at TD 5 running for 2 hrs at Capel Curig during lunch - to keep the dogs warm - in cold weather, and it still was cold inside! The engine won't warm up if it isn't working for a living! The old Gardiner truck engines in trucks were so slow revving, but so utterly dependable, that they would not warm up in winter even when towing a trailer fully loaded! I once had to sit in an old Seddon Atkinson all day near Bala during a similar winter with the engine running just to stop it freezing up, and there was not an ounce of heat from the 'heater'!

You may be right...but I never had this problem in the 300/td5 and v8 though - in fact i was on a highway warming my hands on the front of the v8 at tickover
Maybe your right, ive just never had a land rover do it in worse conditions Mike |

I have exactly the same issue with mine. Reaches operating temperature and then when I'm in stationary traffic for some time (with air temp around 0C), engine cools & heater output drops.
It's going in again next week fr another attempt to stop the waterfall under the dash, so should I ask them to check out the fan ---------- 2021 D250 90 X-Dynamic HSE 2020 IPace - Gone 2015 RRS - Gone 2011 Disco 4 - long gone 2009 TDCi 90 CSW - long long gone |

I had the same when waiting for the ferry at Calais with my 300tdi Camel. Left it at tickover and the temperature dropped I was worried till the other guys told me their Camels were doing the same.
Strong cold wind straight up front the car. I never had it with a V8 but then reading the tech specs of the TD5 the low pressure fuel pump can't keep up with the fuel demand of my G4 D3 V8 Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

My TD5 does this.
The engine thermostat shuts to try to keep the water warm but the heater keeps cooling the water. |

Mine does this as well, after driving at normal temperature when I stop for a while and leave the engine on tickover dpendant on air temp the needle drops to the lower white line Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Had the same in my 08 Double Cab, the thermostat works the same as a TD5 and will only circulate the water around the engine below 1500 rpm, needs to have periods above 1500 rpm to circulate around the heater matrix.
Thats why im fitting the Eberspacher for the Croisier Blanche, i don`t want to be cold when the car is just ticking over |
