Hi,
Does the TD5 have a rev limiter? What's the max speed in the forward gears? Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

Mine does 110 in 5th with standard transfer box (down hill with a following wind on private road obviously) according to the speedo. I'm pretty sure it's power vs forces of nature that stop it.
There is a rev limiter but I have no idea what it's at. |

I was just wondering as I always thought it was the gearbox holding back the vehicle but I have recently found I can go faster than I thought in the gears, I just have never found the rev limiter so not sure its got one?
I've had 60 in 4th and over 90 in 5th. Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

May be you had a sticky wastgate... mine used to feel as if it was hitting a limiter, until I freed it up

This page reckons it can go to 4850rpm:
http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Td5engine.htm Likewise I don't think I've ever got anywhere near that. It just sounds painful higher up the rev band. When I went to Alive Gary was reading out the revs from the passenger seat and they were shockingly low - I think I was changing up at about 1200rpm Since then I've been a bit more generous with revving it, but only when I want to get somewhere. |

I have a plug in box fitted that I inherited but seems to work fine circa 160 bhp.
If I accelerate quickly in the lower gears the vehicle seems to initially go and then 'get reluctant', its almost as if there a back pressure holding back the acceleration. I originally though this was the gearbox but its probably not. Obviously with increased power over standard there has to be something that holds the vehicle back - intercooler/ exhaust/ catalyst? I was the same until I got a rev counter for mine. All my gear changes were around 1500rpm! Was amazing how much smoother and faster the drive was when I started taking it to about 2200rpm for gear changes. 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold
