2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Chawton White
Ashcroft Auto
Contemplating ordering an autobox for my 2.4 110. I know its been covered but I figured I would start a new thread anyway. What are everyones thoughts. I drive mostly around town and am sick of the short shifting of my truck.

I've heard good things.

Anyone have it?

I did it to my 1985 110 HCPU, coupled with a 300 Tdi. After two years of problem free operation, I know I will never go back to a manual box. I work and live in Kenya. An auto box in today's congested Nairobi traffic is very convenient. But off-road too. One has to try to believe it. At first, I was very suspicious ... Up country near Mount Kenya, there is quite a bit of "black cotton" soil that rains transform into nightmarish bog. An auto transmission allows smoother gear changes; a critical driving feature when the going gets really tough. An autobox in deep mud is much superior to a manual. And no, it does not significantly sap power and increase consumption. Greetings to all.

I think tthe conversion is a nice easy drive, I think for town work it for sure is the way to go. I have had Dave's defender a few times to create a special auto remap for it and I did quite a few hundred miles in it and its effortless to drive and makes the defender a real town car for sure.

One thing I will say is the only down side is its a 4 speed just doesn't seem enough for a puma Sad

@big steve -
do you mean it could do with another gear for acceleration or top end cruising.
Is it correct to presume that as the Disco II could cruise at motorway speeds the Puma will also cruise easily at 70-75 as well? BM52

i run two auto defenders (both with Daves boxes although not pumas) excellent way to drive in my opinion, smoother for offroad and towing not to mention town driving.

Puma - i would love to be auto but just can't justify the cost! Cheers

Test drove Ashcrofts Puma when he first converted it. 4 speed seemed good enough and you were not having to wring the engine out to make good progress.

One way to bring the cost down slightly is to source a Disco II or P38 box from a breakers as part ex. They are readily available and don't cost that much.
