It's in for the 105k service and my two accountants (domestic and business) are making noises.
Options are: Keep the D3 - I know the car, have made various mods and have all the bits you need for it. Start saving for the inevitable EGR and Turbo replacements. D4 SDV6 Commercial with comfort, winter and bright packs 110 XS USW with upgraded seats and stereo, winch, rack, LED Headlamps and a LOT of soundproofing, plus keep the substantial change from the D4 price I can afford either option without too much drama, but the 110 makes LOADS more sense financially. I do 20-25k miles a year and have enjoyed 90the comfort of the D3 so thoughts from those who have made the switch greatly appreciated. We have a 2010 XS SW for domestic accountant and I hate the ride of the 90 and noise from the 2.4...... But the 110 with a 2.2? Let's have it gents and ladies, what should I do? 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits Last edited by NoDo$h on 7th Feb 2013 12:36pm. I've had both and faced a similar dilemma when the (2005 model) D3 was starting to cost 'real' money. I swapped to a new 110 XS and have been more than happy. Granted it doesn't have the grunt and some of the refinements of the D3 but parts are a lot cheaper, I got a decent trade in. Probably would have been better off with the D3 for towing the (newly acquired) caravan but the 110 does a good enough job.
D3 load area was far better/longer than the 110 with the seat folded down. I haven't found it at all uncomfortable on long runs, the seats are not that dissimilar in size/shape. I haven't added any extra soundproofing and don't find that an issue. Maybe a job for later. My feeling is that the 110 would be a 'keeper' (my 90 is 24 now) whereas the D3 was starting on the slippery slope of rapid depreciation and costly repairs. The 110 is (to me anyway) a bit of an iconic 'lifestyle' choice vehicle where the D3 was just another (albeit brilliant) 4 x 4 car. It was a shame to see it go if I'm honest and I miss the auto occasionally, but I think I made the right choice and sure that you will. Mines a 2.4 and I have now idea about the 2.2 motor. I had a D3 HSE for 4,5 years and 160.000 km, really liked the ride with it. When I had to replace it I fancied a D4 SDV6, but within those five years the model had become a lot more expensive (trading up interior and stronger engine though), so at least I had a look at some alternatives before buying a new D4. I ended up with a 110 and I loved it from the first day. You probably all know the grin every morning when entering her.
On the other hand my family still misses the D3 for longer holiday rides and I have to admit, it is in fact a little more stressful due to noise, less room and bumpy ride in comparison to the D3. But it has never made as much fun as with the 110 now. I've done 60.000 km in two years and would love her even more if the typical quality problems would have been solved a better way as a factory solution!. Had her at the dealers several times: water ingress, water ingress, water ingress...rust, rust, rust......., cluch, powertrain and quiet al lot of other things. All warranty works were carried out to my satisfaction and always got a 'spare Defender', but would have prefered driving my own one without always having these troubles. My suggestion: sell 90 and D3, buy 110 and D4 if affordable! But be aware: in the end I spend more money with all the improvements on the 110 than I would have spent on a full spec D4 |

By the time you put the comfy spec, metallic and winter pack on the D4 you're well over £40k even with a discount.

I may not be that hot on spotting rotting bulkheads and collapsing chassis, but I can pilot a spreadsheet with one hand while holding a price list with the other
I can reclaim the VAT on both the D4 and the USW, so they're on a level playing field. 2013 upgrade stereo and seats from factory add £1180 gross. Rack adds another grand. Then the lamps and winch for £3k. Sound deadening £500. Assuming similar level of discount on the base car and factory fit bits as I'm getting on the d4 quote and I save a cool £6k and have a vehicle that will be worth more in 4 years time. 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

I can beat the Pious. Use the winch to get me up hills, use the weight of the winch to help me coast downhill faster. Loads of MPG
That's what all day feckin about with statistical sampling models in friggin' spreadsheets does to you 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

Al,
I have just sold my D4 and have a 110 2.2 XS. Initial thoughts are that I miss the D4, fuel economy on the defender is poor in comparison and man maths tells me that you'd save about £1200 a year over 10k miles in a D4. If you ask me what I've ordered next, I'd have to tell you exactly the same again....110 XS Utility in Firenze red Last edited by Higgers on 10th Feb 2013 4:05pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Now you're talking Build date set for the 19th. The thing that amazed me, having just sold my 110 to make way for a 90, was the depreciation on a Defender. I lost £5K for the four years of ownership of my 110, would probably have been less if I could have been bothered to carry on waiting for a better offer. Probably as a company purchase this will not matter that much with write down etc but as a private owner it does make a massive difference. ND, if you are dealing with who I think you are and got a better discount than me I shall be down there to sort them out Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |
