That is normal- many cars do it now where they have a max revs when in neutral. A friend's Nissan Pathfinder had a problem in 5th gear where it would stop accelerating at 2750rpm.... like a limiter- turned out the neutral switch had shifted and was still pressed so the ecu was limiting the rpm.

Cheers Glyn, I did discuss this possibility with him but he thought not, I'll pass the info on to him tomorrow.
Thanks Mike Optimists say the glass is half full.. Pessimists say the glass is half empty.. Engineers say the glass is twice the size it needs to be! |

hello,
I would like that idee that there is a limitation when in neutral ... I am always ill when I have to go once a year to the "contrôle technique" where they put it at max rpm when I am on the road at 2000 rpm ... Phil current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today. I know those idiots at technical inspection in Belgium do that with diesels. Rev them up to the max and hold them there to measure the emissions. I know of quite a few diesels in Belgium which have blown the engine at technical inspection, and worst thing is they have no responsibility.
In this respect, for all Puma drivers in Switzerland there is very good news Where up to now each and every car had to do an emission test every two years (which gives you the round sticker on the window), this test has now been cancelled since beginning 2013 for all cars which from new fall within a certain category. If on line 77 of your grey registration card there is a code B04 or higher, no bi-annual emission control is needed anymore as it is deemed that cars with B04, B05, and up are so clean and eventually will give a signal via a dash light if something is wrong with the emissions. The good news is that the (my) 2.4 Puma has indeed code B04, (and I believe the 2.2 Puma will have B05 although cannot confirm that), so yesterday the sticker was removed, and end of the story. No risk that they overrev the engine anymore for Puma's You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I think this is exactly the same procedure in France as well (not surprising, actually). |

Yeah, it limits it to stop you vibrating the crap out of the engine for no reason.
I remember sitting on the drive in my XK and doing it, don't know why, one day I just did it for the sound of the V8. I thought I'd blown the engine when the limiter kicked in! Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Funny - I noticed the other day that if I rev the engine a bit in neutral and hold the pedal there, the revs go down to idle speed automatically. Obviously some self-correcting software. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
