ICELAND - 20th - 25th January 2013
As I said a couple of months ago, I booked a "Superjeep" holiday with Discover The World. First one in October was cancelled due to only me booking. Second one just took place. Jan 20 - 25th. The company, Isafold, bought 10 Pumas in 2007. Only 1 other person was booked, so we had 1 Defender, a TD5, which the owner used to collect us at the airport. 2 hours later, via a supermarket for the week's provisions, led us to the hotel. Hotel Highland in the southern highlands. 2 days of quite severe off-road driving on snow. The first day, we didn't make our destination due to the bank on the side of the river (see video) being too steep. Jon (the guide) thought another hour of digging would have got us free - we didn't have that long. We saw 5 snowmobiles in 7 hours of driving, that was all. Lunch out of the back of the Land Rover. The aim was to reach the frozen fishing lakes. The next day was similar - a trip through the highlands in the Defender. About 2pm we got stuck in a wet area - half an hour of digging got us out but no point carrying on. Again, on the video. Day 3 was less extreme - on the beaches near Selfoss which are volcanic. More sight-seeing on days 3 and 4. Anyway, if you want to go to Iceland, I would thoroughly recommend Isafold Travel. The owner loves Defenders - but has had big problems with Pumas! They will buy more Defenders, but TD5s from Spain! Broken vacuum pumps, wiring problems, all clutches replaced (10 Pumas). They have a hard life but he much prefers the TD5s! Nice guy. If anyone know of contacts at Land Rover to give some Puma feedback, let me know - Jon at Isafold can certainly attest to using them in harsh conditions! (I have no allegiance with any of these companies, I simply own a Puma). Thanks.
Yes, it was great. No Northern Lights though - the first 3 nights were cloudy and the last nothing happening. Would have been nice, but didn't hurt. 2008 Defender 110 |
