What a timely thread CR. I retire in July and will be shipping our vehicle to SA to tour SA/Namibia and Botswana in October so will be looking forward to your report and photos.

We've done Botswana twice, including a crossingof the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (in a Ford Ranger ). I echo what has been said here; it will blow your mind!
I can highly recommend www.overland.co.za, for some excellent trip-reports on Namibia and Botswana, from the "local" South African guys. These folks do this kind of trip as a weekend jaunt from Johannesburg. There are lots of useful tips in the reports, including routes, where to stay, best places for game-viewing, even how to move your meat around Botswana without it being confiscated at the Vet fences. If you're venturing onto the Makgadigadi Pans or the Central Kalahari, you might want to consider renting a satellite phone (unless Safari Drive already supply one). Our favourite highlights in Bots: - Kubu Island on the Makgadigadi Pans - Third Bridge and North Gate campsites in Moremi Game Reserve -Deception Pan in the Kalahari - Khama Rhino Sanctuary - The drive from Moremi via Savuti to Chobe - Chobe Safari Lodge in Kasane (the evening river cruise is a must-do. DO NOT MISS IT! HTH. 2012 Defender Utility Wagon 1981 SIII 88 inch SW Follow our blog: www.newlifeinnorthernscotland.blogspot.co.uk |

Amazing trip in a truly beautiful part of the world. Superb from start to finish. Just under 4000km one puncture, dodgy
air con and jammed back door from the unbelievable amount of dust other than that it performed really well. 70% on gravel roads and a fair bit off road. People are welcoming and friendly but some of the game have a bit of a temper.
