What gearbox oil 2000 TD5 main gearbox ATF or MTF94?
Going to service my defender over the weekend. Have tried searching but not sure on the results so hopefully someone can confirm.

My owners manual says I need to use ATF for the main gearbox, however looking on here and other sites MTF94 is recommended in the later handbooks (from 2002?)

Is that a different gearbox to mine and I should stick with ATF or is the MTF considered the way to go?

Old receipts seem to suggest it has had ATF used, so is mixing an issue and i should stick with ATF? I need to get ATF for the GKN overdrive anyway.

assuming ir's an R380 box, it should be MTF94 - LR issued an advisory around 2002 that MTF should be used on the R380's...

IIRC MTF94 is supposed to ease a problem of 1st to 2nd gear shifts when cold. However MTF94 is now the recommended oil for all R380's.

BTW - the Part # for a 5-litre can is STC9157

I dfound it cheaper to buy from my local (Pentlands, Edinburgh) dealer (and ask for a good-customer-discount)... Thumbs Up

And here's the advisory from LR:

Quote:
Defender Date: 25.11.98
Freelander
AFFECTED RANGE: All R380 manual gearbox derivatives - refer to text for specific change
points
All Freelander
PROBLEM:
GEARBOX OIL - CHANGE TO SPECIFICATION
CAUSE:
At the following VINs, the original oil fill specification for the R380 gearbox was changed to Texaco MTF94 high performance oil:
Range Rover - WA 384300
Discovery - WA 752315
Defender - WA 131138
New Discovery - All vehicles
The Freelander PG1 gearbox has used the new oil since introduction of the model.
ACTION:
MTF94 will be recognised by its orange/honey colour as opposed to the red Dexron II oil previously used, and is now available from Land Rover Parts.
It is now the only oil which should be used for topping up and complete fill on R380/PG1 gearbox applications.
The new oil is compatible with the old and to enable earlier vehicles to benefit from its introduction, should be used retrospectively on vehicles prior to the above VINs for all top up and refill requirements.
Refer to PARTS INFORMATIONoverleaf for details.
Until further notice, current Service Schedule gearbox oil change periods are retained and must be adhered to.

It's not ATF in ANY R380, the Q refers to the transfer box and that isn't ATF either.

Don't use ATF in an R380, use MTF :)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

My manual states ATF too but when I changed the oils I used MTF 94. A big improvement in the gear change since doing so.

Personally I opted for this ( for the gearbox)

Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80 synthetic manual transmission fluid

It is the same spec as the evolution oils but better price. About £40 to change

Available from opie oils

Very impressed at the improvement I got in a gearbox that has done 200000 miles

Plan to change it every 2 years

Silky smooth now when it was notchy especially when cold before Thumbs Up

Land Rover MTF94 for me. I change the oil at every 6000 mile service. Keeps the gearbox slick. I've also use this oil in the LT77 box with similar excellent results reducing stiff cold gear changes. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies will go with the MTF-94.

I was thinking of using Smith and Allan's oil, used it in the 6 speed box in my laguna (although different spec) and it totally transformed it, seems a decent price too.

Hi,

Changed the oil in my D2 gearbox R380 couple of weeks back MTF-94 paid just over £7/litre to give you a guide price.

Dropped 2.2 litres and put 2.5 back in to get to the level plug

Just make sure you can un-do the level plug before you drop the oil if you do an oil change Whistle Laughing Never lost, just found a new way to get there!

Thank you for saying this, so many people forget to do this.

ALWAYS START AT THE FILLER/LEVEL PLUG FIRST, then Drain plug. After all, you can at least top it up, even if you cant get the drain out...
