Winscreen Removal & reffiting
Hi,

A mate has a 90 with a very poorly winscreen rubber which needs replacing

Now I once watched an auto glass man change my winscreen on my old 300tdi, it was all done in 20mins & he told me that these are very easy to do.

He just pushed out the sreen, swapped the glass over & reused my old rubber. He used a bit of string etc.

Now is there any where with a correct write up with pics on how to do this your self???

If your screen is heated, is it easy to disconnect the wiring?

Many Thanks Chris

I've wondered about this too.

Sealey do a windscreen kit for about £40:

There's a few instructions on the web:

Quote:

Inspect the gasket's condition; if it isn't dry and/or hardened, you could use it again. Otherwise, cut it away with a carpet knife or similar blade. Plunge the blade into the rubber gasket, making sure you don't hit the glass, and carefully cut along the circumference of the glass. You can now remove the glass by pushing it out from inside the car with your foot and a large stick; have someone catch the glass from outside. After cleaning away any rust and debris from the frame, apply sealant to the inner edge of the gasket and attach the gasket onto the new glass. If you're using a new gasket, let it sit in the sun for up to an hour to soften; if the weather outside is cold, let it sit inside in a warm room and just make sure it is pliable. Apply petroleum jelly to the gasket's outer edge and run a nylon rope around that edge, making the rope ends meet at the bottom. Have your assistant lower the glass onto the frame and press on the gasket while you grab the rope ends from inside the car and pull on them, pulling the gasket's inner lip inside the car.

Hi Chris

I have the same problem on the TD5.

Had Nationwide windscreens out to fix a chip in the Boxster's screen two weeks ago and asked the fitter the very same question.

His advice was that if the seal is shot the best thing to do was cut the glass free by removing the outer rubber, he said most breaks on Defender screens were on removal.

Fitting is the old string trick plus lubrication.

He said the cost to remove the screen, new seal and fit (plus seal the screen) was £50, and if they break the glass they have to replace it.

Heater connections are a couple of spade terminals just visible above the dash.

Just crack the screen with a hammer, then you've got your insurance claim.

Cost me £75 excess when I had my heated d3 screen replaced , it was cracked by a stone thrown up by a lorry though.

I think for £50 I know what id be doing (me not being too mechanically minded)

Had my windscreen rubber replaced. Evidently as the Defender screen is flat there's more chance of breaking it rather than a curved screen which is intrinsically more rigid. I took mine to the local (non franchise) car glass place who charged me a small fee to swap the rubber!

After toying with the idea of doing it myself, I had a local independent fit my heated screen and was glad I did.

The old one had one big and several small chips, as it was being removed it cracked completely. It is apparently very difficult to remove a Defender screen without breaking it if it has any defects if you want to reuse the rubber.

As far as the rubber is concerned, early ones (mine is '07, not sure when the cut-off date is) were more flexible and had a better water seal than the later ones (hence the water ingress issues on later vehicles). If you have an early seal in good condition, it will generally seal better than a brand new seal.

I paid £60+vat for the job; money well spent in terms of saved hassle and risks avoided imho.
