United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Santorini Black
Alarm/remote range now non-existent
Has anyone had a similar issue...

Tried to open the defender today and neither fob would open the car. Used the key to get in setting off the alarm then tried the key again and it worked. Basically it only works within about 6 inches of the receiver (the little green box up behind the speaker).

I checked the connection of the antenna to the box and that seems fine, so I'm thinking there's a break inside the green box. Has anyone had a similar issue before I try taking that unit out and taking a look?

Cheers

Two possibilities spring to mind.

Flat/cold batteries in key fob.

Cold weather causing the door mechanism just to catch on the door card etc.

Would try new batteries in key fob first.

But, follow the instructions for changing the battery in key fob - carefully. LANDYWATCH

I've noticed reduced range on mine but nothing much. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Another possibility is a local source of EMI or RFI (electromagnetic or radio frequency interference). I had a similar problem a few years ago which was almost certainly due to a local TETRA cell malfunctioning. If this is the case the effect will be very localised. If it happens everywhere it will be the handset batteries.

OK, I probably didn't explain well enough to be honest.

No problems with the door mechanisms at all, I could gain access with the key itself, no problem. But when trying to open the vehicle with the remote, nothing. No indicators, no unlocking. I tried both remotes (one rarely used) but both didn't work. The fob would, however, set/unset the alarm if I held it within 6 inches of the AS10 unit.

I've since taken a closer look at the AS10 unit (the green box) and I think the problem was corrosion on the connections in the connection block that the antenna comes from. A bit of switch cleaner on the connections seems to have solved the issue.

Let's hope so anyway, and hope it's not something like a dry solder joint or similar inside the unit (because it looks really difficult to get out)...

Cheers all.

And put back in! Had to cut a few holes to get screws back in. Think they put the AS10 in first and then build the car around it.

Smile you're not wrong. I think I'd resort to a strong double sided tape and hope to never see it again.
