heat shield bolts missing plus.... there appears to be a washer missing......do you think this could be even a small problem? Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I'm sure its not a problem but just wondering why theres a mix of bolts and studs for the manifold....I presume this is the same for everyone (tdci) ? |

The missing or loose bolts arnt the concerning issue here though will cause some ratteling and vibrating for sure
In the second picture the actuator arm is rubbing on the turbine casing bolt ? It looks very close to it and if it catches which i suspect it is every now and then it will cause a wonder of problems and driving issues! This could be one of your other running isssues you have mentioned in the past ? it looks like the C clip is missing from the shaft and possibily the arm baring is now damaged ? Pete,
ever thought of relocating to the midlands? I had a meeting with LR and local garage recently (following a fairly recent 24k service) after writting complaining about all my issues. long and short of that was all ok and noises are typical / character of defender........... I also mentioned my concern over drivers door central locking - no problems there sir - a bit of ice last night and I ended up climbing through the passenger door ! thanks Pete - you eagle eyed little devil. will be having another look and putting pen to paper once more !!!! Arrgh |

Your welcome, insist the dealers fit a new actuator arm and pair of C clips with a kit part number LR019905, as well as the anti squeek greese at the same time when fitting with part number LR029042

you're right but to be honest I've not been too impressed with any of the locals LR so will be looking to venture further a field to an indy come service / non warranty works. |

Pete,
sorry - oil seals to g.box. simply got replaced.....they told me that they could have failed from the slightest mis-match / mateing? any how since the input shaft of transfer box, clutch and seals have been replaced things are definately better but we're not home and dry yet. I'm hoping once the heatshield is replaced that'll be job done and the 'lack of power' my have been a perception due to the noise that was being generated but I'll have to wait and see !...... the suspense is killing me. wayne. |

just had a crawl under / around the engine.
the heat shield is missing 3 bolts - 2 at the bottom where fixed to CAT and 1 on the shield support that fixes to the manifold. the 2 that fix to the CAT - can anyone tell me if these are nuts / bolts or bolts with captive nuts? I belive the manifold is threaded to recieve bolt for upper support where bolt is missing so that'll be a piece of cake. |

Where the bolt has gone AWOL from the manifold does indeed have a threaded hole, bolt is M8x20 (FS108206). Check the condition of the metal plate at the front end where it is bolted behind the compressor. I had the same bolt fall out and shortly after it was replaced found the bracket had cracked near the front as well
Bracket part no LWQ500190 The mountings on the cat are captive nuts, M6x12 (FS106126) All the bolts are flange head ones. Good catch by Pete on the turbo actuator linkage - you definitely need to get that fixed. |

thank you for the info fifth horseman....did you have all these bolts fall out ?
how long did it take for you to realise they had gone awol? were you getting significant noise? I guess it didn't take you so long to track down the problem and were not as dumb as myself thinking it was the engine and not something rattling? thanks all. re; the turbo I don't know how I managed to take the photo Pete saw as it did indeed look like there was a problem.......however when I had a look under the bonnet I was amazed to see how different things looked and thankfully there wasn't a problem. bolts are at dealers waiting to be collected so that the 2nd thing on my agenda tomorrow (after making an igloo !) will keep you posted. enjoy and keep safe in this lovely weather. |

For me it was only the bolt on the bracket that went AWOL, took a little while to realise what was causing the rattle as it only occurred under certain speed/load conditions.
I ended up replacing the top heat shield as its made of several metal layers pressed together and the layers had started to delaminate causing yet another rattle. |

well got a call (no let me re phrase that) - I chased the dealer up to find out if the bolts were there for collection and they were
so went to collect all 3 bolts and hey presto.....only 2 available !! So Sat night at about 9.30 in the dark on the drive (so not best conditions) I thought I'd 'pop' the bolts in for some reason couldn't get they damn things to go in ? I'm not the most qualified of spanner chiefs but I still didn't expect any problems....so back to the dealers before I can confirm if this is the problem I've been trying to solve for a long long time !! |
