Sounds like it might possibly be the same problem that I had. A problem with the key and barrel where the key doesn't return to the correct position leaving the starter motor spinning whilst the engine is running. It burnt my starter motor out. I had to replace the starter motor, mega fuse and barrel to rectify the problem. I believe there was a special service action or a recall ref. this problem. HTH

Thanks for that , could explain why the alarm started to go off recently because of the battery drain , what's the Mega fuse by the way , also had a problem with engine running on after I turned off the ignition , thought it was stop solenoid but could be ignition barrel ,
Thanks |

Think describing your latest post Mark's hit the nail right on the head. You could possibly consider fitting an X-Defend barrel lock at the same time for peace of mind. Two birds.....one stone! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

The Megafuse is a (I believe) 500?amp fuse that is contained within the big plastic positive connection on the battery. Mine blew when i had the problem.

Ok the saga continues , removed all wires from back of ignition switch and made no difference so have ruled out ignition problem . Starter still span when battery connected , until it eventually would spin no more , so suspected Solenoid fault on starter , removed old starter and replaced with new one , old starter confirmed not working by direct connection with jump leads. , now engine did turn over for a bit , (battery is good by the way )but would not start , as soon as battery is connected ignition lights come on including glow plug light , without the key in the ignition !,but nothing electrical woks at allso suspecting earth problem , in process of cleaning up replacing neg feed from battery to gearbox via chassis, are there any more earth points , have seen reference to bulkhead earth point on other posts , is this the one near the top on the drivers side with small black cables , or is there another one ? Is there an earth from gearbox to engine or chassis to engine , a location would be helpful as I have some under body protection fitted so its not easy to see everywhere .
Thanks |

Problem found , the loom that comes into engine bay on top of gearbox , was shorting out , now how to repair it ! It's in a nice awkward place , and it's cold outside !
Thanks for everyone's suggestions |

I had a simmilar issue where the vehicle (110 TD5 at the time) was in for a service at the main dealers and we picked it up & drove it to a fancy dress party with 8 people in that night.
All my passengers were rather well oiled at 3 am, so I brought the vehicle round to the front of the club, and turned it off while they all piled in. Went to start and nothing happend! starter was dead as a dodo...! Called the AA and the man came out and after 30mins scatching his head and poaking about in the cold - found that the power lead to the sarter had come off - 2 mins later we were on the road again ! Mind you he probably had few giggles at a landrover full of drunken St Trinians school girls on steriods!
