Do you use it mainly to keep friends & family updated on your location, I know its got an emergency function, just wondered what the other use-cases are..?

cheers

Mainly just for friends and family, as we're usually out and about by ourselves. And yes the emergency button if it all goes pair shaped.

We're off to Corsica in a couple of weeks I'll put a link up to the tracks we take.

The next model up you can use to send texts from your phone if there is no mobile signal.

I use mine to "check in" when I'm offshore on canoeing trips camping on islands etc. I send an "ok" message once a day. I also take it if we go mountaineering and do the same. The rest of the time it's in the box.

Don't you have to buy a contract to go with it as well though? How much is that and is it a worldwide contract or country specific?

Better late than never. A link to my Spot GPS tracker. Not quite Corsica as promised, but you get the idea.

A GPS based systems is obviously belt and braces but for much of the world that has 2G or 3G comms you just need a 69p app on your iPhone called Outdoor Navigation from GPStuner.com. Aside from all the trip and tracking functions it has an emergency function where you can preset 3 alarms: info, panic and emergency settings. when activated by you these are then automatically sent to any email address and it relays your GPS location, a message e.g. "I am in trouble etc etc", battery status of your phone (Battery 89%) and a link to your position on google maps for the recipient to see your location

Worked perfectly well throughout the Nordkapp run last year

Not much cop in the middle of somewhere without GSM mobile phone signal (data) but for everywhere else its fine

I have a SPOT1 and would NEVER go outback or remote trip without it.

Have been several cases here where people have been saved from life threatening situations with one.

Also Very bloody handy if you do atrip blog etc as you can embed a spotwalla map e.g.

heres a trip from a few years ago http://spotwalla.com/embed.php?id=1aa44c3e454cdfe25 the map automatically updates as you go along.

if you have a Spot messenger or are buying one Spotwalla is worth a look, http://spotwalla.com/index.php
I know you can do similar tracking with gps phones but they dont work where there is no mobile phone coverage like 90% of this country.

Mine goes with me on the bike

If I'm sleeping in a bag on a hill in the Brecons my wife like that txt that says "

"I'm here and I'm fine"

Mobiles are useless in many parts of the UK even
