For Christmas, my darling wife bought me one of these for my R380 equipped TD5, which I've installed this morning. As you'd expect from X-Eng, the kit included everything required along with comprehensive fitting instructions:
Click image to enlarge After fitting the lock to the yellow body, the next stage is to prepare the gear sticks. This involves removing both gear knobs and the rubber gaiter: Click image to enlarge The large 10mm nut at the base of the main gearstick is swapped for a security shear nut to prevent it being unbolted and a 10mm half nut is threaded onto the transfer lever. The latter sits underneath the gear knob to prevent it being pulled upwards. With those two in place, but the shear nut not tightened yet, and the tranfer knob temporarily re-fitted, the lock can be assembled and trial fitted. This part is really fiddly first time. Apart from having to get the gear sticks in the right places, the lock is like one of those 3d puzzled with parts that have to be separated, and there was a degree of head-scratching before the two parts were in the right orientation. I resorted to assembling it on its' own and marking it with a felt tip pen so I could see when it was lined up correctly. Once this little challenge is overcome though, a plastic peg is inserted through one of three holes, which keeps the two parts together and provides a guide for doing it next time around: Click image to enlarge To fit the lock, the yellow body is first pushed over the transfer lever knob and twisted slightly. The silver transfer tube is then lined up with the main gearstick and the assembly extended to push them apart. The two sections are then twisted in opposite directions to engage both gearsticks in slots that hold them in position and the lock is pushed home. It's one of those things that, once you've done it a few times, is easier to do than describe. Once I was happy that I could fit and remove the lock easily, the shear nut was tightened and sheared and the gaitor re-installed before the knobs were put back on: Click image to enlarge The finished view from the drivers' side: Click image to enlarge Just a few notes about the installation: the instructions mention that the transfer lever position is adjustable and that the lock may not fit if it it's been altered from the factory position. Instructions are included to re-adjust it if necessary, which involves removing the access panel between the seats and turning two nuts on a threaded bar. Fortunately, I didn't need to do this but it's worth bearing in mind if your vehicle has ever had any serious gearbox work undertaken on it. The yellow lock body is a very tight fit on the leather-clad XS transfer gear knob. It's not the end of the world but does mean that fitting requires slightly more effort than probably envisaged. To be honest, as the main gearstick knob on mine has already been replaced with a standard one (and Matt won't make a leather-clad version ) I may just fit a standard one to the transfer box too. The lock is very robust. I'm pretty sure that the lock is essentially drill-proof and the body is made of thick steel. I'm sure that somebody determined enough could remove it with an angle-grinder or similar, but it won't be quick or quiet. When fitted, the transfer box is locked in high and the main box in 5th. Finally, just a note about X-Eng. When my wife first bought this she ordered the LT77 version by mistake. However, after a quick phone-call to Simon, that one was returned and the correct one was received by return post. Superb service Next job is the ignition barrel guard... Unfortunately it won't fit Croytec knobs, and not even my old XS leather one. So could not use mine

It is fitted to a leather XS one in the pictures but, like I said, it is a tight fit. Darren

If you would have to choose between this X-Defend Gear Lock and an Ard'Case (covering all three pedals), which one of those two gives better protection we think? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Pro-s and cons, I guess. The big advantage of this lock is that it's compact and easily stowed when not in use.

Just went on X-Eng website and apparently this Gearlock does not come in a version for the Puma box... (yet) You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Santa brought me one too, wish I had your interpretation of the instructions before I fitted mine. V Thorough
Just need to fond something to go around the gear stick to prevent it scratching. Electrical tape is doing the job at the mo' Just got to wait for the ignition lock to come back into stock before that becomes the next challenge! |

Never looked at them on the X eng site to see if they did a Puma version or not, as I knew the gear stick was clipped in so knew that would negate the effectiveness of this type of device if fitted onto a Puma. Just passing on that knowledge to a member considering buying one for his Puma, no bigee. |

I have one on my 200, very good bit of kit. I have mine turned the other way round, ie lock on passenger side so the 3 adjustment holes are facing down

X-Eng is a good company.
However at this moment they do not have a pedal box suitable for a Puma Brendan |

Have Ard'Case, a Kryptonite steering wheel lock and the OEM alarm.... Touch wood that that is sufficient protection for where I live.... You never actually own a Defender.
