110 purchase weekend planning advice please
Hi - I've got the greenlight from the missus to purchase a used 110. The tricky bit - I live in Jersey and have a weekend to complete my mission ... to fly to the UK, hire a car, testdrive as many examples as possible, purchase, then drive my newly acquired 110 down to Poole to catch the ferry back to Jersey. Looking for advice on feasibility, areas and dealers.

The vehicle - ideally a 2007+ 110 XS.

The weekend - Likely to be a weekend within the next 4 weeks.

The finance - sorted

The airport - most likely Liverpool, as flights are dead cheap on Easyjet, but Southampton, Gatwick, and Birmingham are also options.

Firstly do you think a timescale of Friday night to Sunday is doable?

Secondly, given the timescale are there good concentrations of decent dealers in the areas either around Liverpool (Or couple of hours drive) to visit a few dealers with a good selection of 110 XS vehicles between 16 to 20k?
Or would Southampton, Brum, Gatwick be a better option?

Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks, Dave

How about Flybe to Exeter then you could do Matfords Exeter (they have a 110 in you range at the moment), Barnstable LR, Taunton LR, Yeovil LR etc working your way back to Poole visiting all the dealers on the way.

Give them all a ring beforehand so they are ready.

Most LR showrooms seem to be closed on Sundays ?

Not sure if you would be able to purchase a vehicle and drive away the same/next day ?

2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold

It would be a real push to do it all in a day, seems to be lots of paperwork these days related to money laundering, insurance etc.

Might be better to spend a few more days, and also pre-arrange the meetings with the dealers. Not sure if you have looked, but Autotrader and eBay have a lot of dealer cars for sale, plenty of photos usually.

Good luck.. Thumbs Up

cheers

It is possible - but as has been said - i would identify dealers with stock and get them to send as much detail before hand - narrow the choices down and then come over -

Be prepared to walk away as there are some good vehicles out there but there are also plenty that are not so good.

I know before buying my 59 plate county that I viewed at least a dozen 110's and spent weeks looking before buying this one.

I also missed out on a couple at the start of my process that I thought I'd be keen on, as I did not seem committed enough to the dealer when I was talking to them and when i pitched up wanting to view - they had sold it.

I managed to drive mine away on the day I brought mine from the dealers as I paid by debit card, that is pretty much the only way to be able to pay and drive away I believe. I had also agreed the deal on the phone with the dealer with the caveat the vehicle had to be in the immaculate condition he had stated it to be in.
Thankfully when I arrived at the dealers the vehicle was honestly as good as new, there was not even a spec of dirt underneath it, not bad for a 12mth old 90 with 8k on it!!!! Darren

I agree with all the above advice and would add the following;
Try to have an idea of colour, price range, extras tow bar etc and then search the various web sites with that criteria. Then hit the phone ask the questions and make the appointment to view.
Good luck Thumbs Up _______________________________

Couple of things to consider -

Why are you doing this over a weekend? If poss do it in the week. As said few dealers are open Sunday (so thats halved your weekend straight of!)

Road tax. I dont know the score in Jersey but you will need it here and the vast majority of used cars have had their disks cashed in prior to px. To tax requires a post office which are only open till Saturday lunchtime. (thats the weekend quartered)

Why are you flying over "blind"? All dealers can take decent photos of the vehicles in great detail if you ask nicely. Find a vehicle (couple if needs be) and get every single scrap of info possible. Agree the price as mentioned above subject to it being as described. It will make it alot easier!

My local dealers took just under 6 days from turning up cold one saturday to test, agree sale and to get the 110 ready for me to pick up. Paperwork on pick up day took ages (2 hrs?!) I had a trade in but that didnt seem to be an issue in the procedings. I would think you would have needed to have warmed up the dealer beforehand to do it in a weekend which might be difficult when you havent chosen the vehicle yet. mind when I got mine local 110s were thin on the ground and if this one hadnt appeared I was probably going to have to travel a reasonable distance to look at any, though I was limiting myself to puma 110 XS spec low mileage ones. That said I dont go defender shopping that often so your milage may vary. 2023 110 P400e

Another small point, as at today there are 4 sub 20k 110 XS Station Wagons in the Main Dealer network. I would get on the phone quick!

Should reclaim 20 % VAT by permanently exporting to Jersey, don't forget to claim for a refund on your road tax either. Pimped black '07 Puma

Would take a vat qualifying vehicle then. Unlikely on a station wagon under £20k

If possible take your time, enjoy the research, it's not worth rushing.

Be aware of the road tax differences over the years.

get a cast-iron guarantee, things like heated front and rear windows are difficult to check that they are 100% working, water ingress, leaks from axles, gbx, tbx. ABS, Traction and Alarm systems check + you will want a service before taking away ..

if you need to export, you will need a COC from Land Rover, this can take about 6 weeks to sort out, maybe a friendly dealer can arrange this more quickly?

good luck and welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

I'm intrigued, so a vehicle with no vat on it can have vat claimed if taken out if the eu?
