From Landy Watch
My three month old Twisted Defender 90 was stolen from outside my parent-in-law's house in Tickhill (near Doncaster, South Yorkshire) during the night on the 27th December 2012... Twisted have looked at the various bits and pieces that I found on the ground after the theft and have confirmed that it was a professional job (given how they disarmed horn/alarm). Please keep a look out for it... distinctive for two reasons - most Twisted Defenders have running lights on the front bumper and body coloured wing mirrors... there are also Twisted logos on the sides and back... picture attached. Absolutely gutted! Link to post on LW http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php?topic=791.0 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I can imagine the forum posts now. There is a parallel universe where LR key fobs are difficult to re-program. The forums are filled with complaints about how the defender is supposed to be simple and threads on how to bypass the alarm!
We all need to face up to the fact that the only reason there is such a high rate of Defender theft is because of the booming trade in second hand parts. Next time you buy a new door/bonnet/bulkhead off ebay ask where it came from.. If it isn't the unaware buyer that is causing the problem then we need to face up to a darker fact. That some people that drive land rovers are scum. Harsh realities! We can't expect LR to fix any of the design problems now, lets face the fact that this is the twilight of the Defender as we know it and fix the problems ourselves. |

Must be very Gutted Its odd, as up to know i haven't seen many late pumas getting stolen and reported on posts Even stranger to take a twisted special- It would be much harder to shift the parts eg, the bumper custom covered seats if had any extra just because you dont get many bits that customised CSK Automotive

We're awaiting the owner to give us some updates on the security on the vehicle but a couple of thoughts have sprung to mind and indeed been posted on other forums/facebook.....
Firstly, the big question.... A factory 90 gets the Twisted make over... Did they improve the security ? They are (according to Skytag website) Skytag agents, so would they not have at least fitted a Skytag tracker as standard ? Assuming that no improvements to the factory security was made, anyone sat reading this thinking their BBUS is a complete solution should think again As Lorryman has mentioned, the layered approach to security based on your budget and your evaluation of risk is the way forward. The only magical solution to not being at risk of having your Defender pinched is to sell it! On a general note, there are enough Pumas out of warranty now to create the demand for more affordable puma specific parts, so we can expect to see more Puma thefts going foward. me@td5 is spot on in that generally, the owners desire for cheap parts fuels a good proportion of these thefts and yes, sadly it seems that some scum bags drive Land Rovers. Equally, could there be a scum bag element in the trade too ? Is it simply innocent ignorance... as in, will the service guys at the dealership happily give out your EKA code to a local 'mate' in the trade or is there something more sinister going on....... A 3 week old truck gets pinched in broad daylight from a crowded shopping centre car park and CCTV appears to show the vehicle being unlocked by the thieves and driven off.... The magical key fob programmers that were recently highlighted....Innocent solution to a common problem or .......??? I wonder if whoever coded it knew the possible applications and put safeguards in ? Total speculation on my part of course but just highlighting the possibility............. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Spot on Jon, there was a independent garage not too far from me doing this, no names it was a while back and they got caught out as it was the workers there but basically they would sell a high top end Land Rover and within a few weeks the ones doing it would pop round and pay the customers a visit as they had all the details of there address etc. The key would have been programmed and cut before hand and all they had to do was walk up to it and unlock it CSK Automotive

Right, that's it! First thing next year I'm fitting a decent alarm, whatever it costs
If it can't be found or disabled it seems to be the only way to stop my pride and joy being quietly removed. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Whereas I agree about Landy parts on eBay a lot of stolen cars leave the country in one piece.
As soon as it's out of the UK it's pretty much untraceable. |

Anyone looked at this system, you can remotely immobilise the car, i.e, the next time (after arming) the ignition is turned off the car is immobilised regardless of if you have the keys or not.

Do they steal Defenders frequently in Germany? Here in Switzerland not really as far as I know, so I think my staged approach of standard alarm, good quality steering wheel lock and Ard'Case will be sufficient. Not even sure if a tracker system would work on continental Europe, outside UK????? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

No - not as much thank God, especially in "backward Bavaria"
However, as I drive to Colchester in the UK (family) and other risky places like Prague, Sofia, Linz etc. (where I may leave the vehicle for days) I am still very wary... I haven't looked into trackers here yet (planning to), but with an ignition barrel sleeve, huge steering wheel lock and another "special immobiliser", my only problem would probably be if thieves disabled the (useless) LR alarm and towed the vehicle away. I'm hoping a completely independent alarm system would make that very awkward Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
