Another "won't go into gear" thread
Here are my symptoms, as of today:

* When fired up in neutral, I cannot get it into any gear. If I try to push a bit harder I can hear a change in noise, but haven't put my whole weight onto it.

* If I fire it up in gear, with clutch pedal pressed, it will actually move forwards slowly (even though the pedal is pressed). It lurches a bit when I slowly lift the pedal

* If hi/lo is in neutral, I can switch gears as smoothly as ever

* Clutch fluid level is OK (although it looked a bit cloudy, but difficult to tell in the dark and with a torch, and temperatures of -6C).

* Pedal height and 'free' travel seems to be within spec, but we were getting very cold at that time, so our analysis might be far from perfect.

* This started after a 15 minute drive, when trying to park. So the vehicle was not cold at that point. However the problem persists.

* It did this once in Poland a week ago, but thankfully I got it moving again, and since then all was mostly OK. Driving every day (back to Finland).

* 1st and reverse have always had a tendency towards stiffness. Maybe 1 out of 10 shifts would need a a couple of goes to get it in. Other shifts were fine.

* Previously when cold and firing up with clutch pressed, I would get a kind of grinding noise. That would mostly disappear after a run. Both of these final symptoms have been there since we got it in early 2011.

Trouble is we need it running by Friday and in these temperatures and with my skills and facilities (no garage), I don't see myself remedying the problem. I can get hold of the parts, if I have a good idea what the parts are, and I can probably then bring it to an independent garage.

Sounds like your clutch is not disengaging. So would look at cylinders, and fluid, or just change both cylinders as they aren't costly.

Could also bethe clutch fork on the way out - a reinforced version is available if you have time to source one...

I did not think that the clutch fork was an issue with the Td5, thought that was Tdi's

I would start by bleeding the clutch hydraulic system through it may well have air in it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Td5 has the same fork as the V8, and it's a huge great hulking cast thing.


Funnily enough i've got the same problems with my project90... just dropped the engine in, brand new clutch, and it's dragging like yours is.

I've adjusted the pedal-push rod as far as i can, and the bottom stop, but to no avail, so think i'll have to pull the engine out to sort it. Rolling Eyes

I'll let you know when there's an update. It's now at a garage. In the summer I would've been happy to try to adjust the pedal, or to attempt my first go at bleeding, but without knowing if that would make any difference I didn't fancy standing in the very windy, freezing blizzards we are getting in Finland right now!

I hope it is nothing big and can be sorted before Xmas, as otherwise our plans will become rather tricky...

Typical too: it's perfect Landy weather. Thick snow everywhere. Parking spots readily available due to snow banks Smile We actually had to borrow an old Range Rover from the garage just to tow the Landy as the Mercedes was just spinning wheels (it was fine towing on Saturday). That was an amazing showcase for the effectiveness of a good 4x4.

I had similar problems, turned that the lock nut had worked loose and too much play on the push rod. found this out after bleeding system and then changing clutch fluid, at least that doesn't need changing for a while.

So What was the result? I've got what seems to be the same problem with the 90 I just bought Big Cry We're not stuck...just enjoying the scenery!
