battery upgrade
I wish to upgrade my current set-up to run 2 main batteries in parallel situated under pas-seat. This will be in addition to the deep cycle battery in the boot. I will replace the main one I have now with 2 new ones of the same.

I want to do this to have more capacity when winching.
Will the alternator be able o charge all 3 at once???

What batteries is recommended for this set-up?

if i see no one get back to you soon, ill ask our farm michanic, shouldnt be much different, but he runs a simular set up to what your suggesting on a discovery, mainly for ac dc converters to run welders etc. will keep an eye on here. see him in a day or two

the leisure bit is immaterial

in fact i run 2 of these in parallel for 12v and 2 in series for 24v on one vehicle

another runs 2 in parallel for 12v and winching as you suggest

i am pretty certain these are the same ones but i havent physcially checked and i know i had 1000CCA. it could be a CXV31MF these: http://www.tayna.co.uk/Numax-Leisure-Batteries-S284-1.html 2nd one down

anything in the CXV range works just find what works for you and space.

do you currently find the two batts you have cant cope with winching or is the bat in the rear not connected to the winch and just runs aux kit? i guess when you currently winch you just winch off the one bat?

alt will cope

adding the extra batts will give you more reserve. Cheers

Thanks guys,

I mean I knew it should be fine theoretically. My Deep cycle in the boot is for fridges etc...CCA not high enough to winch with. Normally one would run your engine while winching (Extra precaution) but I want to be self sufitient in that area. I still need to fit my winch. Warn9000i. So I want to do the battery thing at the same time.

Not quite the same scenario, but I used to tow a Desert Wolf trailer that was fitted with twin 120 amp leisure batteries. The standard 100 amp alternator on my 300tdi Disco of the time would charge them both and its' own without any issues. Darren

devon 4x4 battery carrier with starter red top optima and a yellow top leisure battery or equivalant odyssey and a IBS split charge. Fitted loads of this set-up and works well.

Wouldn`t bother with the parell set up direct of the main alternator (keep your starter battery at optimum charge), if anything, split charge between 1 starter and 2 leisures............... or just use a combination of voltage sensitive relays and heavy duty charge relays and a 4 way master switch (alot cheaper way to do it)

was on about between a decent split charge system and a decent home made split system.

Trouble is with parell is the time it takes to recharge, potentially increasing the risk of sulphation/reduced battery life etc. then as 1 battery goes tits up, the system seeks equilibrium and all the juice out the good battery trys to top up the poor one till there both ucked.

Almost all of the split charge systems are relays which join the batteries in parallel and never actually split the charge Whistle including the Blue Sea systems we sell.
