As myths and legends go, this one's pretty real:
Click image to enlarge This polished aluminium 90 was used for promotional activities during Land Rovers' 50th Anniversary year in 1998. The vehicle started life as a complete production Defender and was taken apart and had unpainted panels re-fitted. Many panels were glued on to avoid the need to use spot welds and the whole vehicle has been lacquered. It's now part of the Dunsfold Collection. Alternatively, this one's quite real too: Click image to enlarge This example, built in 1987, is a display model, intended to show off the interior engineering, and as built by Land Rover’s own special projects department for the Motor Show. It lives in the museum at Gaydon. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? They look awesome........ How much are they though? (on work computer so can't get on ebay).
Would it not be more cost effective getting a set of wide modular rims and a set of flotation tires? Say 33x15.5x15? They might not be as good overall- but at about £800 for a full set of 4 you would be laughing (no need for suspension mods either- just extended bump stops) - could also get up good speed (don't know how fast the tracks can go). I think it's fair to say that these things are pretty specialist bits of kit that would only really be needed in areas that are beyond the capabilities of flotation tyres. I haven't seen any figures, but just looking at the relative sizes, I'd guess the ground pressure would be two or three times less than tyres. Even if the ground pressure being 3 times lower than tires, at 700Kg each (For mattrack) that is an extra 2.8 tons!! That is over doubling (nearly 3 times if you have a 90) the overall weight of the vehicle!! I think if you can casually throw £15-20,000 for a set of tracks then why not go for it (I wish I could) but personally if it were me I would save some money for fuel and get a BV206... then you really can go anywhere..... even on water Glyn |

700 kg each and 15,000 GBP
In Argentina there is a company that do those matttracks but the total weigth is far less than 700 kg each (only 450 kg the set of 4). Price should be around 8,000 GBP. Anyway, as said somewere only are needed in very special conditions. So is not in my priority list at this moment http://www.mongi.com.ar/index.html Cheers Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

Well the £15-20,000 was taken from the e-bay ad, so maybe he is making out that they are more expensive to justify his price tag. Or like anything else the UK are soo expensive for everything like that. I did notice others on the mattrack website which were a lot lighter.... but they were only rated to 1900Kg which the 110 is over as standard and the 90 with a full tank and a couple of passengers are on the limit.... I guess it depends if you want to take the risk. Then again, would be worth it just for the looks......and the way others look at you !! Glyn |
