TD5 Fuel pressure
Hi,

I have made a fuel pressure gauge after using donated pipes from and old PRV. It works very well and I am now in need of some information what I should see for a healthy fuel system.

1st I measured the pressure before the PRV which was a little over 4 bar once pressurised.

2nd I measured the pressure as it came out of the fuel cooler which was .5 bar.

I have found a little info. on the internet where they suggest the 1st reading should be 7 bar approx and the 2nd reading be 4 bar.

Does anybody have any experience with measuring the pressures and what to expect? Eventually I will lengthen the gauge pipe for readings while under load.

The pressure after the fuel has gone through the pressure regulator should be a fairly consistent 4 bar even at high revs, the pressure before the regulator direct from the pump is normally around 7 bar. No idea about the return pressure through the cooler though.

How do you know the gauge is anything like accurate? Was it taken from a calibrated instrument? Often things like that can be 'indicative' at best...

that looks just like the bit of kit i need to test my fuel pressure, would you be willing to lend it or make another one for some shiny coins, its a last straw attempt to make my td5 sound like it should instead of a tractor. If at first you don't succeed, hit it harder or get someone else to do it.

Hi Alex,

Your welcome to use it if you are passing. Have you kept your old prv block for the donor pipes?

Wslr's offer sounds good, by the time you have all the parts and your time...

Hi, thanks for the replies, i haven't got the old regulator as it was returned to the supplier for them to return to the manufacturer, Ill let you know if im passing Steve B and WSLR i might be giving you a shout if i decide to get a pressure gauge made, a local Landy garage have said that they have a kit for testing the pressure so goin to give them a try first, they have said that i can take my regulator off and check the filter behind and just fit a new gasket and o ring, is this a wise move or not? If at first you don't succeed, hit it harder or get someone else to do it.

Off topic but what other exciting things have you got going on under the bonnet? Is that a catch tank of some sort on the bulkhead?

Yes. Just a cheap one of ebay.

Just air and diesel going into my engine, no egr or blow by. The only benefit really is no oil build up in the intercooler. Emissions still ok.

I've been looking at a few mods to reduce the oil mist going into the breather and also maybe fitting a catch tank or a filter with an oil return.

This was my thoughts too, also should an engine problem arise it should reduce the chance of running on its own oil?

One point, if you do it make sure the pipes and tank breath freely. Any restrictions and the crank case pressure will be too high and seals/ gaskets will leak.

So the oil breather catchtank is connected as follows:
Rocker breather hose goes into a catch tank, then the oulet of the catch tank then reconnects to the original breather pipe and then any engine oil gets caught in the tank and does not (or reduced) enter into the Intercooler which in turn does not get into the inlet side and dragged through the engine?
