i used bicycle inner tube for the ladder on my Hannibal rack - it is thin and the ladder gutter mount cut through a bit. To mount the ladder to the rear of the truck i used rubber tap washers to seal the bolt hole and space the ally ladder bracket from the body capping.

Hannibal racks come with a U section made of thick rubber to go on the gutter spreader bars......what about improvising an old rubber door seal or similar?

When I fitted my Patriot rack I did it single-handed (and it is seriously heavy). In order to protect the roof I put a folded blanket on the roof, then laid two long timbers lengthways on top and secured them with ratchet straps. The timbers were thick enough to ensure the rack feet were clear of the gutters when the rack was on the timber, and were long enough to stick out over the rear flap of my IW canopy.

Once the timbers were secure I rested the front end of the rack on the rear of the timbers, then lifted the rack and slid it forwards. Once in the right place the straps came off, then it was easy enough to raise each side in turn, slide out that timber, and position the feet in the gutter.
