On my car (Volvo XC70) I have had great results with Vredestein WINTRAC's.
For the Defender, I notice Paddocks are doing deals on winter tyres at the moment - and they often do wheel & tyre packages... http://www.paddockspares.com/land-rover-wh...abber.html I have a set of Boost Alloys I bought 2nd hand, and at some point will have a set of summer and a set of winter wheels (as I do on the Volvo)... The correct answer is in the 4th post of the 1st thread in k9f's above post .....
got it You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I was actually wondering the same thing. My 2012 110 is on its original tyres (boost alloys with the conti cross), but I am travelling to Switzerland one of more times this winter. Do I also need winter tyres to meet local regulations?
If so, any recommended tyres/alloys? |

Weird, somehow I had Switzerland as a mandatory in my head. In any case, what are experience with winter tyres? I need to do 1000km to the Alps on highways and then spend time on some pretty steep slopes with lots of snow and limited cleaning...
I have no experience with my landy in the snow, poor farmboy I am... Edit: Just to be more specific, I am looking for a wheel/tyre combo. Would not mind spending a bit, but do need to keep highway miles in back of my mind, so nothing too "noisy". Was thinking sticking with 235/85/16" but then changing to some black wheels (somehow love black) and good winter tyre. Am I right with sizing, or are there better alternatives in some? Any tips for black wheels? |

I have been looking at winter tyres recently and have read the above threads however things seem to have moved on with tyres over the past year with regards to sizes available I think this is mainly due to the new regulations around noise etc.
Although the Nokian tyres are undoubtedly great tyres, I was considering a purchase for a one off trip and therefore ruled them out on budget. I came across these: http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco...gn=froogle Does anyone have any views on them? Jason. |

Think I will give the General AT or other winter tyres a pass. For Germany "winter tyres" are compulsory, but the AA indicates that they accept tyres with the M+S marking. For Switzerland they indicate "snow tyres" are not compulsory, but vehicles should be "equipped to travel through snow".
I think that my standard Continental AT with M+S marking should thus do the job, no? Saves me a hell of a lot of trouble and cost of course. Will just need to by some snow chains, anyone with some advice on that? Cheers for all your help, much appreciated! |

Anyone with tips for snow chains? Don't want to get stuck with some crapy chains breaking, but am not expert buyer of chains either...
These seems decent, although somewhat more expensive at £135 a pair. http://www.snowchains.com/4x4-snow-chains/thule-xg-12-pro |
