300tdi temp gauge
Hi, I was just wondering how much the temperature gauge is supposed to move, I've always had modern cars where it sits at half way and I've never seen it move, however I done a 15 mile motorway drive in the defender today at 65-70 and the gauge was constantly moving from just over half way to nigh on the red and back down again over and over again, is this normal? When I came off the motorway and was in traffic I noticed it was sitting just below the red for a while too and the heater had stopped blowing through hot air even though the temp gauge was just below the red, is this anything to worry about?

i've got the same issue with my 300tdi. its not using water and it's had a radiator, new water pump, P gasket and replaced some of the hoses. the heater still works fine too. I believe the waterways are gunked up, so I'm going to run some cleaning fluid thru it tomorrow.

have a look at the back of the water pump - are there any signs of a leak (drip marks?) - are you using water ?

and of course - do you have an air-lock ?

ho hum, the joys of 300tdi's still at least there's no electronics to go wrong Thumbs Up

I ran the central heating cleaner thru and then attached a hose to the heater in (the pipe that runs about the head) and all sorts of "snot" came out, ran and ran until all clear and refilled with an a/f mix.

took out for a run and it seemed better, but when I put the headlights on the temp went up Shocked cleaned earth connections and now runs fine.

air lock in the heater pipes, if the coolant is hot and the air from the heater is cold then either the water is not flowing through the heater pipes or there is no water in them

could also be earth related as DSN found out some time ago with a tdi conversion! radio on, temp gauge goes up! Cheers

Hi, just in case you were all wondering, it was the water pump, I was losing coolant slowly at first and the leak progressed as the water pump deteriorated further. The leak only happened when the car had reached temperature, the was no leak with the engine off or with the engine on and the vehicle stationary. New water pump fitted, all has been working well. Thanks for your help!
