IMHO the road surfaces in this country are shocking. Who ever thought those beige sections that make up the road surface on crap roads were a good idea. The idea of having a conversation goes out of the window in any car.

Give me the A6 from Calais to Reims in France any day. It is the best made motorway I have ever been on. It helps that it's always empty and my usual M-way is the M25.

Half hearted attempt - half success
I bought some adhesive vibration damping material (the sort used by ICE installers) and stuck this to the sides of the driver and passenger seat bases (there is not room for anything thick between the seat base and the door). I put some thick foam underlay under the carpets under the front seats and cubby box and lining the driver and passenger footwells. Finally I laid the same underlay to cover the floor and sides in the back (only where covered by carpet).

Overall a cheap exercise and only slightly successful. It is impossible to judge sound deadening without optimistic bias unless using proper equipment. What I really wanted to dampen was the noise from the engine. I suspect that under-bonnet sound proofing and enhancement to the firewall layer (which would be virtually impossible) would be more effective.

I don't want to dampen (geddit?) anyone's hopes, but the more insulation there is up front, the more water is held against the metal to speed up corrosion.

What happens under rubber mats can stay there for ages until you lift them and inspect. Most of the time you'd never know that your carpets are sodden. Check them regularly and get them in the airing cupboard Thumbs Up

If you think your roads are crap, come down this way for a holiday Rolling Eyes

UK roads are sooo much better.

As for noise. The best thing I've found is to have the back of the Puma full of camping gear to the back of the front seats. I'm more concerned about putting a heat shield over the transfer case so I can use my under cubby strong box. It gets so hot you could use it to cook in.

I actually don't find the Puma that noisy. I suppose because I drive a Tdi 110 every day - wife gets the Puma as daily driver Sad 110 2.4TDCi

I second the above post. Just driven the 110 200 tdi this morning. Compared to that the Puma is whisper quiet. I do not think the Puma needs additional sound proofing. If you are not convinced start up and drive a series 111 diesel or a 200 tdi on a cold morning! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Yes the Puma is heck of a lot quieter than my old Turbo Diesel 90 Very Happy

But i do find the hard top "drums" at speed, so i am thinking of ply lining the sides with some form of insulation (foam?) between this and the Hard Top sides.

I'm already in the middle of fitting ply on the wheel boxes. It is already all cut to size and is in the garage being varnished at present. When fitted I will also be gluing rubber matting to it which should reduce road noise from below. MAD COW

Try a roll mat that you use for sleeping out on. It can be cut and fitted to the hardtop sides or cut and fitted beneath the footwell trim. It can also be cut and stuck to the inside of the seat boxes. Cheap, waterproof and does the job. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Points taken.
I don't have a mobile phone.
I am still running on General Grabbers.
I have to drive 12 miles to find a road that I can legally do 60 mph on.
I still say it is a (relatively) quiet vehicle . My series 111 diesel would need to be stopped with the engine turned off in order for someone to use a mobile phone! Very Happy 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
