Not enough to justify the wiring IMO . I'd spend the same cash on noise killer and get the same result.

This may be a daft question guys, which of the head units have a SD card or hard drive facility. I want to store my music on the head unit rather than transfer from my i-pod and or phone. Secondly, for those who stream music via bluetooth, can i please ask how good this option is? thanks all Bow down

Those look a bit deep to be a direct replacement.
The treble will be totally lost too.

I find coaxial speakers a complete waste of time if you want to improve sound quality. A good set of components with decent crossovers is a much better option. But like I said before, on a defender you'd be better spending the money on sound proofing.

I'm just about to sell one that does - only a few months old but not getting used.

I'll dig out the info for you. John

You can also store music on a USB memory stick on some like mine. You can use it like that just like an iPod only off of the USB Stick. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

What about the area at the side of the dash, the bit that points at the window, what's behind that bit? It's closer to the tweeter than the standard place so would make a good, out the the way place for a set of mids.

From what I remember there is a lot of re-enforcing ribbing to the dash in the sides and as per usual very little room. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Sorry to hijack the thread - but still relavent to the original question - what are peoples opinion on DAB radios for cars.
Is it still too early to install one and should I wait another six months for the choices to increase and the prices to decrease. I have an Alpine head unit - mainly for its ipod connectivity - but Alpine only offer one DAB head unit.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the mountain of responses! Quite a lot to take in - and as ever plenty of nicely conflicting opinions!!

Basically from what I'm getting back, sound proofing is the first step? I will go and have a little search now for some Soundproofing info however what sort of budget should I allow for that and will I have any cash left over for an upgrade?

I've got a 110 SW XS and I do use the seats in the back a fair amount so removing them for new speaker housing isn't really the route I want to go down. Very simply put:

What is the order of changing things to get it all sorted? Don't mind doing it in stages. From the above I'd hazard a guess at:

1. Soundproofing
2. Head Unit + Front speakers (which ones exactly?)
3. Rear speakers?
4. A car where you can actually hear it.

I personally for your £400 would find a mid range head unit for about £200-£250 and spend the rest on sound proofing then save up for a good set of front component speakers (don't buy cheap) then more sound proofing for the back and finally a small sub (active would be easier) then rear speaker upgrade if you feel it necessary

If it were me I'd spend the full whack on a kit of soundproofing from NoiseKiller. It'll do excatly the same job as buying a few cheapish components and you'll get a nicer car to boot. No-one else will agree of course.
