It's summer down here. Not that, that helps
As for the lights I'm seriously looking at an HID kit but don't know which to buy. I have 240HID LIghtforce (240mm) spotlights on the front and when you turn them off it feels like the lights have all gone out. If you do a search of the forum I think there's a thread on HID upgrading. Post up what ever you do anyway as I'm interested to learn what others have done. 110 2.4TDCi 110 300Tdi LROCV ::: AULRO.com |

The 240HID Lightforce Lamps a pair in the United Kingdom retail at over £1000. Value for money in comparison must be the 240XGT Lightforce at just over £160 a pair surely? I could certainly not justify over a grand for a pair of driving lamps, my Missus would have a dicky fit! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! The standard upgrade for Defenders (and Series III) was always to fit Wipac Quadoptic Halogens insteasd of the stock 35W headlamps.
Of course Land Rover now do that for you and they are the OEM fitting. I have heard bad things about the so called upgrades available such as "crystal eye" clear lenses lamps, look pretty but no better or worse than standard. HID bulbs seems to be the way to go but there are problems over their legality. Without pressing the quote button;-
There is a myriad of bulb upgrades you can fit, the Halfords website has numerous options. Alternatively Googling 'Headlamp upgrades Land Rover Defender' gave me 10.900 possibilities in 0.28 seconds. Didn't mean to offend by using the quote button but my previous retort was relevant just to that post and was a little off topic. I too have considered a headlamp upgrade like yourself due to me travelling across Salisbury Plain on my route to and from home. A windy route that can be made treacherous by Winter weather. I decided that a driving /spot lamp option was the best route and was horrified at how high the cost jumps when you go to HID territory. I would surmise the same cost implications would apply to headlights.
In my opinion if the lighting on your Puma like mine is deemed as inadequate the above would be a viable and possibly the best solution by adding to your existing candellar capability with extra lights. No offence taken at all I'm offence proof. Agreed best to add spots and there are cheap HID's available. But I'm going to try bulbs first as I would also like an improved dip beam. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I put Philips X-treme Power upgrade bulbs in my headlights - not a huge improvement, but noticeably better than the standard, cheap & no legal or over-heading problems.

I've used the higher power bulbs in a number of vehicles and there usually is a small but noticable improvement. Main difference is the light is a bit whiter and that sems to help.
I am personally a fan of having driving lights but it is worth paying for some decent ones. I had a pair of the cheap spots you can get from Britpart (about £35 a pair). On my Disco 1 (with upgraded bulbs) they hardly made a difference. I later fitted them to my last Ninety, they did help but only because it still had 35w/35w tungsten bulbs; that was until one of the spots popped out of the shell and fell off somewhere on the A1 one dark night When I got my last Freelander it had the Rallye 2000 optional driving lights i.e. original LR accessories but I believe made by Hella. Only standard 55w halogen bulbs but really effective lights. It shows that you get what you pay for! Thinking of a pair of Light Force 170's but at £190 a pair that is a lot of dosh. Has anyone tried Roo Lights, and can report on their performance? They look very similar in design and spec to the Light Force but come in at only £62.50 (i.e. £125 a pair) for 180's. So still not at the cheap end of the market but a bit more acceptable. MAD COW 2007 90 Hard Top - 2009 BMW F800GS - 2002 CCM 604E Dual Sport Project90 |

What are the pros and cons of mounting the lights on the grille vs a bar above the windscreen?
I would imagine there's a theoretical restriction to radiator/intercooler airflow from front mounted spots but I'm guessing it doesn't make any real difference (winches and A-bars would do the same) and roof mounted ones might reflect off the bonnet. Any other preferences? One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Roof-mounted lights are not road legal - as I understand it they cannot be wired to come on with the main-beam, but have to be on an independent switch for off-road use only...

If you go down the path of a higher wattage bulbs it pays to fit a wiring loom upgrade for the lights. My understanding is the Puma's headlight switch is - at long last - relayed. However as I couldn't verify this to my satisfaction I installed the kit from www.traxide.com.au as it plugs in without any modifications to the wiring loom, gives a thicker cable and relays the lights back to the battery. This alone will slightly improve the light output. The other issue with higher wattage bulbs is the plastic backed headlights and the effect heat has on them, reducing their life.
My Tdi has the IPF X51 "Fatboy" Bulbs installed these offer a very bright light - and I've upgraded the wiring harness in it too so it is relayed direct to the battery. 110 2.4TDCi 110 300Tdi LROCV ::: AULRO.com |
