Had this prob on my 90 '08 from new. Its only the driver & front passenger doors
I open the safari door - meaty metal handle, not puny plastic buttons, & crawl to the front seat. Not elegant but never failed. Once the engine & heater have run for 5 mins, the side doors unfreeze enough to open (& hand brake enough to be released ) Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. My last few Defenders have done this on cold frosty mornings.
Unless its very well lubed, you'll struggle. I know this is a little old fashioned, but I've always found the way around it is to unlock it with the blip (so the alarm is deactivated) and then use the key in the lock. It's never failed for me yet.......! JH Currently....... all gone...... pending delivery of a mid life crisis....... Previously..... Quite a few! I really am a sucker for them! |

This is ACF-50 (apologies for sideways picture). If you haven't come across it before it's a useful corrosion inhibitor. Used (in commercial quantities) for example to protect machinery whilst at sea for months, it's also useful on Defenders to prevent doors and fuel caps freezing but also to protect any exposed nuts, bolts, door, bonnet hinges, rivets, seams etc. Do a search on the forum for Zagato Corrosion Protection Guide which gives some useful tips. Click image to enlarge There's no rocket science to using ACF-50. In theory it's better to remove the driver's door card to get at the lock mechanism however in practice I'd advise against it as you're likely to break the lugs off the door card whilst removing it so making the whole job a lot harder. Try spraying as per the pics below and only if that doesn't work consider removing the door card. hi, just to say i had the same problem for years, so far didnt solve it on 90 TD4.
very frustrating being the only one in the street, not being able to enter is own car, having to climb through back door, or worse, having let the door close while removing the snow from windscreen, finding myself locked outside with running motor... in the snow of course. thank you for the posts. |

2008 Puma. Wife came home this evening. The rear door will only unlock by using the key but will lock by using the keyfob to activate the central locking. Only had time to spray some WD 40 this evening so will see what transpires tomorrow. Strange how it locks on the keyfob but will only unlock by inserting the key and turning it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
